Civil Rights Leaders: Heat Can Have Disproportionate Impacts (We Need Climate Justice)

As the heat wave continues, some civil rights leaders say high temperatures pose a particular threat to poor, minority communities. On days like these, the heat affects everyone. But, Hilary Shelton says, it doesn't affect everyone equally. Shelton is director of the Washington Bureau of the NAACP.

"In one community, it means you keep your air conditioner on longer. It puts a strain on your family budget, but you get through it. In another community, it means poor, elderly people are dying in their apartments," he says.

I heard a rumor libraries are air-conditioned.......

Of course the elderly and the young are more vulnerable to environmental stresses. But IMO - and that of my EMT son - most of these fatalities are due to complicatons stemming from dehydration, not ambient temperature, per se. IOW, preventable without “entitling” them to A/C. This just another “race card” being dealt. >PS

One of the reasons that Native Africans can take the heat is the way that they are built. Tall, thin people radiate the most possible heat as opposed to Eskimos, who are more “spherical”, with minimal surface area, who retain as much as possible.

This is not “racism”, it’s genetic selection and the laws of thermodynamics.

I could go on with some reasons that this may not be working here in the US, but I think I might get into trouble.

Jeez, there are probably a dozen government programs that help people pay their power bill. In many places it is also illegal to disconnect someone’s power if doing so will put their life in danger.

This is why is some “urban” settings, the elderly are revered - but only those who require electricity in order to live (i.e.,an oxygen generator). This is because if you have one of these precious, respected elders living in your home, your electricity cannot be turned off. You can pick your teeth with any of those pesky notices that you receive.

Take a cold shower! Most of us in the south growing up in the 50’s didn’t have AC. We picked up a magazine and fanned ourselves.

The way I see it, they have some choices here. They could sue God. Or they could ask the man they voted for enmasse why his economic policies has driven the unemployment numbers in the minority community into the stratosphere.
Right.
Like either of those choices are going to happen.

I see what’s coming.

First “Internet access is a human right” and this is going to end with “air conditioning is a human right” ... wait for “heat is a human right” come winter.

And who will pay for this ‘human right’ you ask? NAH, YOU didn’t ask, you already know the answer.

We all know the answer: Small business owners and the rapidly disappearing middle class, who else?

BLAME EPA and a gutless Congress for disallowing cheap electricity and refusing to rein in the EPA and the Enviro-weenies.

Don’t get me started, I won’t be able to fall asleep tonight.

I’m so happy that I got out of Mobile. I just do not miss Sam or his folks. If I could just get rid of that house, I would have a clean break. It was a good place to live at one time, long ago...

Well, I’m not exactly a marathon runner from Kenya, but I like the heat, too, for a while - then I run back into the air conditioning!
