Up To 8-Foot Long, 160-Pound Mountain Lion On The Loose In Greenwich, Conn.
CBS 2 ^ | June 9, 2011 | Lou Young

Conservation Experts: This Size Cat Hasn't Been Seen Here In 100 Years. There has been a wild animal alert issued in the northern suburbs. A mountain lion, yes, a mountain lion, is on the loose.

...

We’re not looking for your Aunt Mildred’s kitty here, either. This is a big cat, a 160-pound predator that hunts and eats things.

...

Ironically the Eastern mountain lion was officially declared extinct only a few months ago — in March.

“... finding a large mountain lion calmly standing under your bear bag, just staring at you”

That story scared the heck out of me. At that point, I would have just wondered if the tinkle draining down my leg would act as a repellent.

Hey, Greenwich was a traditionally conservative town—though it is however pretty evenly mixed GOP/Democrat now.

“This is a big cat, a 160-pound predator that hunts and eats things.”

Aside from weight, most house cats fit this description. My kitteh’s preferred prey is spiders.

Liberals ARE chicken.

The *gold coast* as we affectionately call it...is quite conservative...not at all like to rest of the socialist state.

My son who is pretty outdoorsy[talks to a lot of hunters, he's a field-tester for Cabela's, is on several hunting forums]...said the lions they have been seeing/or have been reported to have been seen have radio collars on ...LOL we'll never get the truth from this DEP...they released fisher cats into CT and never told anyone, until caught in lies about it.

*it appears that the animal is a mountain lion that has been held in captivity and was released or escaped*

Here: A project to reintroduce this native mammal into northwestern Connecticut was initiated by the DEP Wildlife Division in 1988. Fishers were obtained by first trapping wild turkeys in Connecticut for release in Maine. Funds from reimbursement for the turkeys were used to purchase fishers caught by cooperating trappers in New Hampshire and Vermont. In what is termed a "soft release," fishers were penned and fed at the release site for a couple of weeks prior to being released.

Best confirmation will be a dead lion.

Remember the lady w/ the chimp who chewed her friend’s face and hands? ...from the same general area.... lots of wealth in those towns and little responsibility. Who knows?

That’s the punchline to “how to recognize grizzly”, as opposed to black bear scat.

Sez who? My girlfriend’s, neighbor’s, hairdresser’s husband sent a blurry pic of what he said is a mountain lion taken while bowhunting in Kent. He used to work for the DEP and said that they have video footage and pictures on file but won’t put it out there, publicly, that they are roaming our forests.

Yeah right. ;D

I have it, with authority, that the cougar jumped out of Sarah Palin’s bus as she passed through Connecticut to New Hampshire.

It’s her fault.

In 2003 there was a report (by the police) of a mountain lion about a mile from me (25 miles west northwest of Boston). I doubt it was a mountain lion, probably a bobcat, one of which I did see in Concord, about five miles from me and that much closer to Boston.

There used to be sporadic reports about 20 years ago of mountain lions in Western Massachusetts, but I have my doubts.

I've heard that they taste more like pork.

That’s a good place for it if it will eat liberals.

Greenwich Village would be even better.

*laughing*

I don't know about that. However, we hung the oops bag as a crew and all nine Scouts saw the mountain lion - the couple of guys in the back only saw it silently slink into the tall grass, but that was enough for them. The rest of us got a fairly lengthy look at the lion from about fifteen yards away, in the light of our headlamps or flashlights, and it didn't seem bothered by us in the least.

Seems the Mountain Park camp at Philmont has a large field where mule deer like to graze . . . and where there are mule deer in a place with as large a mountain lion population as Philmont, the large field was a buffet and our chosen campsite was between tall, rocky outcroppings and the field.

We instructed the Scouts that if they had to go to the bathroom during the night that they needed to wake up their tent mate. The two should talk and sing for a few minutes, then get out of their nylon tent and roust one of the two Scout leaders. We'd all talk and make noise and find a place where the Scout would have some privacy to attend to his toilet.

It was an interesting night.

For some reason, nobody - no Scout, no leader - found a need to leave his tent that night.
