After I read the story, that’s just what I thought too. The mother is blaming everyone but her sadistic husband who, according to his older brother, beat the boy mercilessly into shock “every Friday night.”
There's nothing in this story that says Kirk was "gay," or was involved in any kind of objectionable sexual behavior whatsoever. The one thing we do know for certain is that he did things that are harmless, blameless, not morally wrong (e.g. stroking his hair, for heaven's sake??!) and for this, was beaten regularly and severely.
Beating a child like that is a crime. A kid who is treated in such a hateful way, for whatever reason, is going to grow up with a whole lot of emotional pain, and --- as far as I know ---- emotional pain is much worse than physical pain as a precondition of suicide.
We do have to look for "the news behind the news" on this. This unfortunate man was brutally abused by his parents 30-40 years ago, and died 8 years ago. And CNN finds a way to headline this NOW, drag in the names of NARTH and the Family Research Council (with no evidence that they knew of or approved of any of this) and call it "news" because....?
I wonder.
Homosexuals have a far higher rate of suicide than hets.
If you want to keep your child from suicide do try to discourage any homosexual behavior.
“This type of aversion therapy is what a lot of the anti-gay FReepers would probably do to their innocent children.”
That is a terrible thing to say. Do you have any basis for that assertion?
I have never seen ANYONE on FR advocating doing this to a child.
Gays have extremely high suicide rates. Homosexuality used to be classified as a mental illness and was accompanied by a varity of dysfunctions.
CNN is focusing on this one mentally ill fellow to make it appear that real therapy (used before the 70’s)
is dangerous - murderous. What a bunch of self serving hooey.
Unbelievable!

“Then Kaytee Murphy saw a psychologist on local television.
“He was naming all of these things; ‘If your son is doing five of these 10 things, does he prefer to play with girls’ toys instead of boys’ toys?’ Just things like this,” she said.
The doctor was on TV that day, recruiting boys for a government-funded program at the University of California, Los Angeles.
“Well, him being the expert, I thought, maybe I should take Kirk in,” said Kaytee Murphy. “In other words, nip it in the bud, before it got started any further.”
Kirk becomes ‘Kraig’
Kaytee Murphy took Kirk to UCLA, where he was treated largely by George A. Rekers, a doctoral student at the time.
In Rekers’ study documenting his experimental therapy (PDF), he writes about a boy he calls “Kraig.” Another UCLA gender researcher confirmed that “Kraig” was a pseudonym for Kirk.”
...
Rekers, who conducted the therapy on Kirk, went on to build a career of influence based on the premise from his research that homosexuality can be prevented.
He became a founding member of the Family Research Council, a faith-based organization that lobbies against gay-rights issues. Rekers was also on the board of the National Association for Research and Therapy of Homosexuality, an organization of scientists that says its mission is to offer treatment to those who struggle with what they call “unwanted homosexuality.”
“He's viewed as an expert by some, you know, when it's — when it serves their purposes,” said Bryant. “So, you know, basically, conservative and what I would call mostly ‘fringe’ groups have really, you know, Rekers as their poster boy.”
Just last year, Rekers’ days as an anti-gay champion would come to an end. He hired a male escort to accompany him on his trip to Europe.
Unbelievable!

The monster father used to beat him with a belt. I wonder where the clueless old lady was during all of this??
How could ANY parent allow this sick so-called therapy to be practiced on their child??? And if I ever got my hands on this Rekers b***ard...
I think homosexuality is the main issue that they will hammer on. Bestiality, possibly decriminalize it, but not much more than that. The reason for choosing homosexuality is because you can pretty much imitate divorce by sticking fairly “intelligent” or “consenting” individuals together, and have a decent shot at improving the image. Plus the specific homosexual behaviors do the best job at offending whatever traditional religions are out there. Polygamy is likely to be a far more immediate issue. The main step there is getting measures to not force divorces of polygamous immigrants.
