Bring BBQ indoors: Texas county bans grills for July 4
reuters ^ | June 7, 2011 | Jim Forsyth

(Reuters) - Light up the grill for July 4 and get six months in jail under stringent new burn rules imposed by one Texas county in response to a devastating and record-breaking drought.

An effort to stem wildfires, which have already taken out millions of acres of ranch land here, has encroached on the unofficial Texas pastime of backyard grilling -- as much a part of Texas as football and pick-up trucks.

Well, I haven’t seen a grill start one either...and yet I can see someone taking their used charcoal and dumping out in an alley or on their property where there is so much dry underbrush and it starting that way.

That said, we DO live in a nanny country if not state and everyone is jumpy about fires right now. I just hope it rains and SOON!

When it gets to dry, I do ask that people don’t use tracers.
Tannerite should still be fine.

Fire up the George Foreman Grill and save Texas.

As someone who lost my family homestead during a drought-spread fire I see where they are coming from.

According to the news on KPRC 740am the fires outside the Dallas area were accidentally started by a Federal employee.

Maybe if you are a government worker you should have your matches taken.

Better yet, grill it enough to get the flavor on the 3rd and heat it in the oven on the 4th.

While I agree with burn bans, this grilling ban on a single day is a bit ridiculous. It’s because everyone will be grilling and shooting off fireworks that day so there’s more of a chance of fires. The firefighters can handle one or two fires but if there’s more they won’t be able to get to them all and then it’ll be a disaster. We’ve also been having high winds more so than ever so that’ll send any flames on the dry grasses sweeping across the country.

We’ve had one bit of rain here since I don’t remember when. And that didn’t do any good since it dumped barrels in about 15 minutes and that was it. We were fighting to keep it from pouring into the house. Then it was just a run off so nothing much soaked in. We’ve had so little rain that we haven’t had wildflowers this spring and that’s unusual. There was a pasture fire a couple weeks ago that was out of control and people were evacuating their homes. We’ve been under a burn ban for months and I have trash piling up. It is a tinderbox here.

Hey, MY! Have there been any bans announced near where the shoot will be?

Of course, by October, I am REALLY hoping that the situation will have changed!

Maybe NOT as wet as it was last time we were there (don’t want anyone else stuck in the mud), but still.....

I received an email that Gov. Perry just added SB 9 Anti-Sanctuary City Bill to the call of the special session this afternoon. That is Voter ID and Anti-Sanctuary City.

Woo hoo! Pass them through in a hurry!

Sure, how many times have all of us seen drunks and/or idiots trying to start a grill and having the brilliant idea of getting it going better by squirting lighter fluid on hot charcoal? BOOM! FLAMES!

Not liberal at all, it probably has more to do with who the Fire Chiefs are. I would bet a small group made this decision and I expect the next election will fix this .

Don't know, but I'd say since Guadalupe County is a liberal bastion

2008 Election Results:

Obama/Biden: 34%
McCain/Palin: 65%

2008 Presidential Elections Results in Guadalupe County, Texas
