I finally broke down and purchased my first gun for home protection.
It's the Mossberg 500 12 gauge. It has a short barrel and is great for in the home use. It even comes with a pistol grip but I wont attach that unless it everything goes all "beyond thunderdome" on us.
Going to take my wife out and make sure she knows how to handle it. I felt a shotgun was better and safer for an in home protection mechanism in our case. Heck, just the pump-action noise is enough to send someone packing.
Anyway, in for a penny in for a pound. I set aside money for 3 purchases of different firearms. I feel safer knowing we have it, just hope to never do anything with it.
I wish you the very, very best of luck with that. Seriously.
Next, get a .22 semi rifle and come to an Appleseed. We’ll teach you how to outshoot 90 pct of the people posting here for $70. See my tagline.
Of course it is Remington. What happens when I get up late and type without coffee.
You can also look for tactical loads, which have the same number of pellets but less powder. They have less kick and less penetration then normal 4 buck or 00.
A work in progress. My wife thinks I should try to lead by example but that is just crazy talk.
My rule is a claymore
Unfortunately, I can’t go into a gunshop and purchase them.
I remember that day. I told you sit down but nooooooo...
You still owe me my gun collection. When are we going dredging again? I think I remember the spot now that I'm sober.
“Unfortunately, I cant go into a gunshop and purchase them.”
Try Arizona or Texas gun stores. I read in the LA Times that the drug gangs buy hand grenades there, so they might special-order a claymore for you.
I think claymores will penetrate houses, not just wallboard.
If you want one for the wife, Mossberg Mavrick makes one for around $200
You can stow the pistol grip gimmick away right now, but I advise you to try it out at least once just to prove to yourself that you're really unable to hit anything when using it and that the recoil can be painful. You'll want to find out that the shot pattern inside 10 feet isn't much larger than the bore size and your shotgun isn't a magical room clearing grenade. Realize how useless the pistol grip is, then remove it and toss it back inside the box your shotgun came in.
Now, a pistol gripped *stock*: That's better than just a traditional stock for both accuracy and recoil. Much better. Waterfowl hunters are adopting the pistol grip stock in big numbers these days.
My first multi-round shotgun was my Mossberg 500 12Ga. It is still my favorite small game shotgun even though I now have several.
I favor the thumb safety. It is more comfortable and faster for me than the front trigger guard safety.
Once you get used to firing it you may want to use 2 3/4” #4 Buck Shot for home defense. After several studies it showed the #4 was great for taking down an opponent. A hit to the legs will drop them and almost guarantee severing the femoral artery. A hit to the chest will do the same damage as 00 Buck but with many more pellets.
For home defense 2 3/4” shells will do just as good a job but not put the missed shot out as far. Good for the neighbors but still just as lethal for the perps.
As long as it leaves a bloody mess where a bad guy used to stand.
Good choice. We just picked one up a couple of weeks ago. I would definitely use the pistol grip but just get a tactical stock which is what we have. Plus a heat shield for the barrel. We are now looking for Ghost rings for the sight. They glow in the dark and give you some night sights. Not everybody will shows up in the daytime.
As far as a rifle I would get a Polish AK 74 from Classic Arms. We have one and its lightweight enough for a woman to handle and we just put a side rail on it which we are going to mount a holographic sight. Makes for easy target acquisition. You can get a good price on one at Sportsman’s Guide online.
.357 magnum or .38 Special are good reliable handguns. We have a SW model 14 Combat Masterpiece .38 Special with a 4 inch barrel. They shoot great and last forever.
Good luck and welcome to the club.
Good for the house.
Did you know that if you had purchased a Mossberg 590, you can mount an M7 bayonet on it? 20 inch barrel and nine shot tube. If you put a tube extension on it, you can’t mount the bayonet.
Heh-heh!
[snicker]
I hope you got that branch!
