I finally broke down and purchased my first gun for home protection.
It's the Mossberg 500 12 gauge. It has a short barrel and is great for in the home use. It even comes with a pistol grip but I wont attach that unless it everything goes all "beyond thunderdome" on us.
Going to take my wife out and make sure she knows how to handle it. I felt a shotgun was better and safer for an in home protection mechanism in our case. Heck, just the pump-action noise is enough to send someone packing.
Anyway, in for a penny in for a pound. I set aside money for 3 purchases of different firearms. I feel safer knowing we have it, just hope to never do anything with it.
My 2 cents, but I defer to you on all things petroleum.
A close second is the "smack smack" sound of the lever action on a Marlin 336c (30-30) or 1894c (38/357). Both make excellent home defense rifles and both are a heck of a lot of fun to shoot. I have one of each as well as a Remington 870 12ga with both the 20" barrel for home defense and 26" barrel for bird hunting and clays.
Sound wisdom.
Plenty of harvestable protein in any suburban/urban area, and a bolt action rifle is very discreet.
Some folks give good advice. Hope the OP takes it to heart.

I can never tell when you are being serious.
My dual pistol grip makes my shot gun is much more effective in close quarters but not the best huntin’ iron.
Of course I ain’t going to be hunting ducks in my house.

Short shotguns are very handy too. A rifled RemChoke in an 18" tube will pattern buckshot well at 35 yds and put slugs in a paper plate at 80+ yds. I never had any "tactical" grips on my shotgun, as noted I like them on the short AR. I bet a purpose built auto-loader would be the bomb!

Good with me, and I ain’t no expert. I cringe at poor advice. To me that means telling newbies to buy a Glock or an AR, or a 1911A1 for that matter.
DA wheel guns, pump shotguns and bolt rifles are a good start.

Had my new 870 Remington magnum for some time before firing it. Lots of cool rack-rack sounds of course. Went out to try skeet with a friend, and was a complete farkup as I just did not have a feel for how much harder you have to shove the slide forward when actually chambering a round. Kept getting jammed up partway into the chamber and pumping again after shaking the shell out of the action. Shotgun equivalent of limp-wristing it I suppose.....

Yup but you can get the EXACT same sound from cycling the action on a semiauto shottie as well. My Benelli sounds exactly like that. Problem is that these days there are fewer and fewer bad guys who will be so impressed with the sound alone and scamper off into the darkness whence they slithered in the first place. With so many gang-bangers enlisting for combat duty as a sort of OJT and then taking those real world skills back to the 'Hood... and then there's the younger generation (middle school) having just ZERO level of fear about anything -- I know I'm just finishing my 16th year teaching in an inner city high school -- I'm not so sure about any sort of audible warning if I catch a bad guy inside my house. Less if it's on the street here in FL. Of course, I won't be toting a shottie on the street unless it's a BUG OUT SHTF scenario and then all bets are off anyway.

Same here. That's the perfect sentiment.
Me, I only go slugs and "00" Buck in the shotgun for self defense. Anything that will penetrate a human body reliably to stop an assault will also penetrate drywall. Best to spend much time becoming as proficient in hitting your target than compromise stopping power.
And by the way -- for the OP -- The Mossberg 500 or 590 makes a great home defense weapon. I have both.
