June 6th, 1941

UNITED KINGDOM: London: British Intelligence receives reliable information that Germany will attack Russia on 22 June.
Corvette HMCS Bittersweet commissioned on Tyne and proceeded to Tobermoray for workups. (Dave Shirlaw)

GERMANY: Hitler orders the Wehrmacht to eliminate all commissars - Communist Party officials - in the planned assault on the USSR; he says: “Any German soldier who breaks international law will be pardoned. Russia did not take part in the Hague Convention and thus has no rights under it.”

MEDITERRANEAN SEA:The British carriers Furious and Ark Royal deliver more Hurricanes to Malta.

PALESTINE: Australian 7th Division is in position on the Palestine-Syria border. The Australian Official Historian observes, “it was the first time in this war, or the one before, that British troops had hidden, like Germans, near a peaceful frontier, ready to make a surprise invasion”. On the French side at the coast, elements of 24th Colonial, 22nd Algerian and 6th French Foreign Legion Regiments are entrenched, supported by seven battalions of artillery. The British invasion force has little reliable intelligence and only 1:200,000 scale maps. Some information is provided by Palestinian Jews attached to the British Army. Air support to the invasion is initially inadequate with 70 aircraft versus 100 French. As the invasion progresses it will be enhanced, eventually including: 80 Sqn RAF (Hurricanes) based at Haifa, 3 Sqn RAAF (Curtiss Tomahawk IIBs) based at Jenin, 208 Sqn RAF (Hurricanes) at Aqir, 203 Sqn RAF (Blenheim fighters), 803 and 806 Sqns FAA (Fulmars). Bomber support will consist of 84 and 11 Squadrons RAF (Blenheim) and 815 Squadron FAA (Swordfish). Finally, ‘X’ Flight RAF is formed at Habbaniya this day from the Gladiators remaining after the Iraqi Revolt. Information on French air units TBA. (Michael Alexander)

CANADA: Lt John Alexander Davidson RCNVR awarded DSC.

Arrived Halifax from builders - corvettes HMCS Arvida and Galt.

Minesweeper HMCS Ingonish laid down North Vancouver. (Dave Shirlaw)

NEWFOUNDLAND: Departed St John’s with Convoy HX 131 for Iceland, Corvettes HMCS Pictou and Rimouski. (Dave Shirlaw)

U.S.A.: Act authorizing acquisition of idle foreign merchant ships by the United States approved.

Gerow recommends to Marshall that the Philippine forces not be called into Federal service. Further recommends MacArthur be given command of the Philippine Department. (Marc Small)

First US Navy vessel constructed as minelayer USS Terror launched. (Dave Shirlaw)

Day 645 June 6, 1941

Axis submarines have a busy day in the mid-Atlantic. 350 miles West of Gibraltar, Italian submarine Marconi sinks British SS Baron Lovat (all rescued) and Swedish SS Taberg (15 killed). At 5.03 AM 250 miles West of Cape Verde Islands, U-106 sinks British SS Sacramento Valley (3 killed, 39 survivors in a lifeboat and a jolly boat rescued on June 9 by British MV Caithness, 7 rescued from a jolly boat on June 24 by Panamanian tanker Stanvac Calcutta). At 8.24 PM 930 miles Northwest of the Azores, U-43 sinks Dutch SS Yselhaven (24 killed, 10 survivors in a lifeboat rescued by Finnish steamer Hammarland on June 15 and taken to Norfolk, Virginia, USA). At 11.25 PM 630 miles Northwest of the Azores, U-48 sinks British SS Tregarthen (all 45 hands lost).

Hitler issues Guidelines for the Treatment of Political Commissars (Commissar Order, Kommissarbefehl) during the upcoming invasion of USSR, ordering that Soviet political commissars should be shot.

Got some quick items for today that are of note:

The volcano Tavurvur on New Britain erupted causing no real damage but it did force Lt. Carr to move his garrison for the 2/22nd battalion to a safer area referred to as Malaguna Camp. Many of the men of the 2/22nd will later be interred in this same camp when the Japanese turn it from a military base to a POW camp.

The Commissar Order issued today formally charges the Wehrmacht with the immediate execution without legal procedure of political elements within the Soviet Union.

“Hitler Ridicules U.S. Fears, Hold Nazi Attack Wild Idea – 7”

This interview is amazing and has lots of parallels today concerning US trade and labor disadvantages with China.

The reporter tells Hitler that Americans were afraid that German labor under National Socialism was forced to accept lower wages and lower living standards than American labor would ever accept (plus the use of slaves from conquered nations) giving Germany a competitive advantage over US labor! Sounds exactly like China and the virtual slaves who make Apple products!

Hitler says that that under the “Iron Law of Trade” no nation will allow a foreign nation to sell into its markets unless that foreign nation reciprocates by opening its markets. Ha! The US elite has allowed Japan, S. Korea and China total access to our markets while locking out US manufacturers and also allowed artificial disadvantageous exchange rates. If US politician were looking out for Americans, Hitler would have been right!

Thanks for the alert. Until now I had only skimmed the article when I was preparing the post. It is interesting because of the parallels you point out and also for the eye-witness glimpse into Berchtesgaden. This may be the last report from there by an American until the 101st arrives in about four years.
