John Wayne introduces James Arness.
Hope they are in heaven making westerns.
At least now we can hope he is with his brother, Peter Graves, who died last year.
Clint isn't on the list?
RIP and have fun above.
All I know is that when I was a kid he scared the fire out of me in “The Thing.”
According to Rush, he very rarely gave interviews. I got the same vibe off of him that you did, just a neat understated 6’7 actor. Ken Curtis was really cool too, I just saw him in the Searchers a couple of hours ago on AMC. God bless ‘em both.
Freegards
I think it’s impact is so strong with us because it was a weekly tv series, not just a movie.
In our living rooms, week after week, year after year, then on reruns.
I feel as you do. Something was just cut out of the heart of America, with his death.
Matt Dillon, US Marshall, aka James Arness, is gone from this earthly life.
This hurts.
So sad to learn of his death. He was a man’s man who helped to define American values through his acting. Never heard of a scandal with him, either. Loved him.
I too grew up in the 50’s n 60’s never missed “Gunsmoke.” Today I still watch the re-runs, was a great show unlike the junk they put out today. My wife got me a painting of him for my birthday a few years ago, which he signed. It hangs in our cowboy room with other treasures of Westerns days gone by.
I loved that show!!!
Here is the opening, then a joke opening filmed by James Arness. Hilarious!

A true hero, served his country, entertained us through heroism without vulgarity or bragadocious meme, was a great role model for our children. Well done, Sir. Rest now...
Great Westerns,You tube has one “Death of a gunfighter” very good the writing, the acting, fantastic gunsmoke show from the past.
If you can’t get the show on TV, you can watch it on Netflix and YouTube’s “Gunsmoke Channel”. But I know what you mean. I love him so much and cried when I saw the headline. Like many of us here, Gunsmoke remains my favorite show, and I watch it almost every day.
Legend is that GUNSMOKE was offered to John Wayne. He turned it down and suggested they hire Arness. At first Arness turned it down and Wayne went ballistic.
I don't think so.
