Pet pit bull mauls and kills 15-day-old baby
Pit bulls and other large dogs continue to maim and kill people. Is it because these dogs are aggressive and dangerous or are they owned by irresponsible and careless people?
Buster didn't have a history of being aggressive. He was a family pet, a year old and hyper like many young dogs. Buster's owner, 25-year-old Mallory Wildig had been staying at her mother's house following the birth of Darius on February 4 along with her 2-year-old son, Keylin Tillman. She would return home to feed Buster and let him outside. The times she couldn't get home a friend of her father would stop by to feed the dog. Wildig and her two children returned home on February 19. She had Keylin feed the dog, he was then let outside and given a bath afterward.
After reading to the children in Keylin's room she turned a movie on for Keylin and took the infant to her room for a nap. After closing the door she returned to Keylin's room and laid down with him for his nap. The dog was on the floor near them. Her cell phone woke her up about 10 minutes later. She went to check on Darius and found him on the floor dead.
The Kalamazoo Department of Public Safety report said she, discovered that Darius was dead and had been mauled and partially consumed by Buster."
The report said she sobbed throughout her initial interview with Detective Sheila Goodell. According to Mlive.com Wildig told the detective when she found her son his bassinet was tipped over and Darius was on the floor.
According to the police report Wildig said, When I walked into the room, there was blood on the bassinet and he just looked like a little doll on the floor. It felt like all of this was a nightmare.
Charges of involuntary manslaughter and cruelty to animals were sought against Wildig, but the Kalamazoo County Prosecutors Office declined to authorize charges. lamazoo County Chief Assistant Prosecutor Carrie Klein said, This was her baby. She loved her baby. She was traumatized by what happened.
Klein said to charge Klein there there would have be gross negligence showed.
Klein said, Nobody ever saw any aggressive or violent tendencies from the pet at all. There was no way for the mother to know it was going to attack and kill someone. It was not gross negligence on her part to have the dog running loose in the house with the baby in the bassinet. She had no way of knowing the dog was going to do what it did.
Buster was euthanized and an autopsy showed the dog's stomach was full of food.
Last month, Saquina Jubeark, a mother of three little boys, ages 2, 4 and 5 said she left the room they were in to get something out of the stroller. When she returned to the room where the boys were she saw her Cane Corso tearing at the 4-year-old. The little boy died from being bitten in the head and neck.
According to neighbors the home was like a zoo with the Cane Corso, a pit bull, a German Shepherd, a parrot and a snake.
Neighbors said it took 10 firefighters to remove the dogs from the home.
Nydailynews.com reports Kenny Riser the superintendent of the building said "People were scared of those dogs. The dogs belong to the husband, who is seldom here. This was a tragedy waiting to happen."
Shelbra Freeman, 72-years-old saw her neighbors pit bull loose and was trying to let them know when the dog turned on her.
Another neighbor heard the dog barking and when she went outside she saw Freeman near her yard. wyff4.com reports her neighbor Erica Sykes said, "(Freeman) was just laying here screaming for help and she had blood running everywhere. So, I just wrapped her arm up with a towel and squeezed it real tight and just tried to help her breathe and calm down because she was still screaming .All I was worried about was just helping her. I mean, it was shocking."
Another neighbor said, "I ran over there. She was sitting up with her ear lobe chewed off and blood all over her arms and, I mean, it was just horrible." Freeman is recovering in a hospital.
Chad McBride from the Anderson County Sheriffs Office said the dog is being quarantined for 10 days and the owner, David Milner, has been cited for no proof of rabies and dog running at large.

dogsbite.org is a propaganda tool.
A *lot* of mutts [especially Lab/Chow/Boxer mixes] “look like pit bulls” because of the shorter muzzle/wider head factor.
A simple DNA test would prove what the dog *really* “is” but there’s no sensationalistic yellow journalism joy in doing that.

I could go on and on with this, but your mind is already made up.
The truth of the matter is that 99.9999% of the time, the problem is the OWNER/HANDLER of the dog. Even this story was very dismissive of the lack of a strong Alpha in the pack.
Yes, there are bad dogs, but they are FAR less common than bad/incompetent owners.
As Ive said, having debated pit bull owners/supportersdoctor's patients for pages and pages of FR posts, I now realize that death toll is just fine with pit bull owners automobile drivers, swimming pool owners and amusement park operators blah blah blah.
Just trying to show how absurd your attempt at argument is.
Until the war on (certain) drugs, this was not a problem, but now we have thugs using these dogs as weapons, and many wanna-be's and inept folk thinking that they can "handle" these dogs, or they want them so they can "look tough". It's NOT the breeds fault, but the owners, and the patrons of the church of perpetual panic (AKA the mainstream media) definitely seem to have infected you with their hysteria.
I have no emotional need to deny that dogs bred for hundreds of years to be aggressive are in fact, aggressive dogs.
Therefore I have no need to fantasize about conspiracies regarding dog species nor to make wild claims that it’s the war on drugs that has resulted in pit bulls killing more Americans every year than all other breeds. All over the world, nations are banning pits and pit breed relatives based on the medical/mortuary outcome - but that no doubt is part of the grand conspiracy you believe exists against pits in the United States - so our war on drugs has apparently infected the breed perception in Europe and South America!
Lame, lame, lame use of amusement parks, automobile drivers, etc. If one amusement park killed far more people than all other amusement parks - OSHA and other organizations would take an interest and if that one amusement park killed an American every 22 days (on average) the way pits do - I assure you legal recourse would close that park down. One model of automobile that spontaneously killed drivers at a rate of one every 22 days? The cost, the carnage, the death toll, the number of police calls and the need for the police to shoot ONE BREED as often as they do just to protect human life and you try to compare it to amusement parks?
You have it made, really. Every time a pit kills a family member, you demote the family members to ‘irresponsible people’ or ‘thugs’. Bad enough they have a family member die because the beloved family pet went into rage mode - a trait too many of that breed evince- but then the pro pit lobby says “Tsk tsk tsk...should have been responsible.” or just paints all owner/victim families as thugs. No proof needed really - just attack the victim and...for good measure...throw amusement parks into the mix. And if you do that often enough - maybe we’ll just forget that the article we just read about a pit bull killing and eating part of a baby! In fact, if you throw in automobiles and the War on Drugs maybe we’ll be too distracted to consider that this breed kills more than other breeds especially given it’s only 5% of the population. Disproportionate death rate - meet ‘amusement parks.’
“It’s NOT the breeds fault, but the owners, and the patrons of the church of perpetual panic (AKA the mainstream media) definitely seem to have infected you with their hysteria.”
Yeah, I see what you are selling, but as more cities and countries adopt pit bans and breed specific laws, it aint workin’.
More and more the pro pit lobby starts to resemble CAIR. A Muslim is arrested on a flight for trying to ignite a substance in his shoe and CAIR posts a lament that ‘hysteria’ is driving people to falsely malign or mistrust Muslims. On a thread where we read of another family member killed by a pit bull - you’re just sure my concern regarding this breed is hysteria. Well - you have that psychological need to distort reality - I can just point to the documented, unprovoked deaths and maimings that make this the most lethal dog in the US and causes it to end up on BSL across the world. And the pro pit lobby does not want any law to interfere with their pleasure in owning this specific breed despite that death toll. Priorities.
“The truth of the matter is that 99.9999% of the time, the problem is the OWNER/HANDLER of the dog. “
You cite pro pit propaganda (oh the Nanny dog link you posted is the most disgusting and it doesn’t bother you to post it on a thread where the family pit killed and ate the family baby - some nanny!!!!) and end with this fantasy figure you can’t possible begin to defend (99.9999% HAH! OH YEAH - CITE THE STUDIES PROVING THAT!!!!)
“I could go on and on with this, but your mind is already made up.”
You could go on lying and fantasizing but the well documented killings and maimings this breed is responsible for outweigh your psychological need to defend this dog, bred for aggression and still bred/prized in dog fighting circles, against accusations that it is actually aggressive.
brain lesion?
never heard that one before...
not to mention...you can breed a brain lesion?
rotflmao...that is so bizarre
people want a mean dog you don't have to breed it...just treat em like crap and if female they get skittish and mean and if uncut male they get pissed and mean
it's sure not complicated
but breeding meanness?
Dogs are born with physical traits ...that is pretty much a given
‘
‘Mental traits are much more subjective other than instincts..such as herding, catching, rooting, retrieving etc
never bought that about breeding meanness...a few weeks ago it was a Cane Corso and before that a Rott...
People are killed by dogs...only way to stop that is outlaw any dog capable...which is at least half the breeds
and some folks ...especially the ones who detest purebreeds anyhow and think everyone must have a mongrel with no nuts attached will be so happy..we can have the dogs wear Birkies too
it's odd to see such govt intrusion on a conservative board
selective conservatism...it's always been that way here...and uninformed...which is really scary considering that freepers are as rule more informed than the GP...which means the general population is veritably stupid
Hi Chet...be sure and do your polling duties next year...you are good at that
btw...do you think it’s a coincidence that folks who tend to be hard on guard breeds and especially Pits or Staffies are usually soft on social issues as a rule
Does appreciating Pits go hand in hand with being a culture war type like us?
“Even this story was very dismissive of the lack of a strong Alpha in the pack.”
If this breed is prone to killing family members if there isn’t a sufficiently strong alpha in the pack, it should be kept in a zoo, not in residential areas. You are describing wolf pack behavior. Wolves and pits eventually challenge the alpha in the pack for leadership - this may strike you as strange but the family dog is not supposed to provide a ‘red of tooth and claw’ daily fight for dominance. ‘Domesticated’ animals should not have to be restrained from killing it’s owners with sufficient shows of dominance. Those who raise wolves as pets unfortunately encounter nature and lose. One family wrote movingly of their wolf and how he fit perfectly into the family until the day he tried to kill the father in order to take control of the pack. This blame the owner thing is so wrong on some many fronts - in this case you make an argument that supports those who say pits ownership should require an exotic animal license and enclosures that meet special code regulations used for exotics. I support this notion because the damage caused by one or more rampaging pits resembles wild animals more than it resembles domestic dog damage and also because owners throw up their hands and say “he got out of his cage” as if saying ‘hey it’s not my fault my dog killed someone’. When a beagle gets out of his cage, there’s far less likelihood that someone will be maimed or killed because beagles fall within the behavior we expect of domestic dogs - even problematic domestic dogs. Pits don’t.
look at homepage of main offender here...see what I mean
I just don’t think folks like us will ever agree with Bully bashers like that
and I admit...I’m proud of it
I never knew there were conservatives like this until I joined up here 11 years ago and wandered into my first southern or race thread...Memphis Belle..since banned..scolded me when I took issue with her claim that diluting the white race was the only way to atone and get races to get along...I bet you she woulda been a Pit basher
when did conservatives get so self righteous and arrogant about the South and now pitbulls?
I know catch Bully type dogs are associated with the South and formerly rural areas till the ghetto discovered them
Regarding my 99+% post: Evidently you’ve not heard of hyperbole and exaggeration, though you seem to be using it yourself.
Any avoidable death is tragic. Look at the numbers YOU posted and tell me again how rational you’re being:
32 people died by dog in 2009, 14 of them (40%) by a pitbull.
That’s one in TEN MILLION by dogs overall, one in TWENTY-ONE MILLION via pitty, which is likely overestimated since any dog that weighs over 25 lbs is considered a pitbull by the press.
You or anyone is THREE TIMES more likely to get struck by lightning (one in 7 million chance if outdoors on an open field in a thunderstorm last I checked) than attacked by a pitty, but because YOU don’t like them, you see fit to attack those who appreciate the dog for what it is.
I like your strawman regarding how “insensitive” it was for me to post TRUTH about what these dogs actually are. They were and are used by those who know them as guardians, minders and companions for children. They are misused and maltreated by those who fear them.
Face it, if a dog that was bred for fighting was the LEAST bit human-aggressive, that dog would immediately be destroyed, simply because the handlers value their own lives. To think otherwise is to be self-deluding.
Literally millions of these dogs have and do go through their lives without harming anyone. There are some few that have issues usually related to poor training and handling, but with a firm hand and good technique, all but the most incorrigible are salvageable. Look at Michael Vick’s canine victims and see for yourself. The story is 5 pages long, btw. http://sportsillustrated.cnn.com/2008/magazine/12/22/vick.dogs/
And just for a change of pace, here’s a little ditty about this dog. Look at all the damned fools who appreciate this breed. Linda Blair even puts in an short appearance with hers! http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=TtGT2apOlKw
Have you ever even HAD a dog? The ignorance of canine traits and behavior in some posts is breathtaking in its depth and immensity. ALL dogs are wolves, that’s where they came from, FRiend! Nearly every dog will challenge for dominance at some point, but a good owner/handler knows how to deal with that.
Anyone’s visceral hate for this particular breed bespeaks some other issues, but as I am not a therapist, I cannot help them overcome this irrational hatred.
After reading the article a third time, there are a couple of irregularities that keep catching my eye, the most glaring being that the dog’s stomach was full of FOOD, not baby parts. That and an absent but somehow also abusive husband.
Methinks there’s much more to this story than meets the eye, and mama’s not talking...
This breed is your religion - I am not trying to break your faith in it - I am only point out that those of us do not practice your religion see the data objectively and the BSL and banning the breed will eventually protect the populace where empty tsk tsk tsking about ‘irresponsible owners will not’.
I know the genetic lineage of dogs and how they relate to wolves. I have owned dogs. And while any of them would challenge me for dominance, none of them would kill me for it. The breeds I have owned don’t have the body count that pit bulls have. Well, no other dog breed has the body count that pits have.
Again your post parallels the protected status of Muslims. Those who complain of jihadi’s are accused of mindless hate -the same way you accuse me of hating the breed. I don’t hate the breed - I acknowledge that this breed contains too many members which kill and maim. It’s a shame there’s no test for this unprovoked aggression, the attack-with-out-warning and massive damage attacks - if there was we could remove the violent ones and preserve the rest of the breed as pets. But there is no test. Pit owners seldom accept responsibility, pay for the damages and that breed simply kills more people than other breeds. I am in favor of laws to protect people from them and from their owners. Pit owners like the way things are now - with that breed killing more than other breeds they insist that the death count is imaginary and ‘ignorant people’ simply conspire against the breed. They label reasonable concern as ‘hysteria’ and insist no action be taken other than calling the victim/owners ‘irresponsible’ or ‘thugs’. That’s the action plan the pit lobby has developed over the years.
” From 2005 to 2009, pit bulls killed 82 Americans, about one citizen every 22 days, versus rottweilers, which killed 21 Americans, about one citizen every 87 days.” http://www.dogsbite.org/bite-fatalities-2009.htm
The death toll is acceptable to you and to others in the pro pit lobby. It is not acceptable to me.
Oh, what do you know, Don?
You come in here slinging facts, empiric evidence and sane, rational replies around like a wild man.
You’re just like CAIR and probably a Muslim mole.
[and if we dig deep enough, I bet we’ll find out you secretly worship Hitler!]
/dripping sarcasm
*Why* we do we keep giving retread-Chet and his creepy dog-killing crew any attention?
Is it *our* problem that they have such a dog phobia/neuroses they feel compelled to post _every single “pit” article_ they’ve frantically scoured the net to find?
Lousy nanny-staters.
Ban this breed of dog.
Ban that type of gun.
Ban this kind of fat.
Ban that kind of food.
Ban this size vehicle.
Ban everything *we* fear or just don’t like.
There are “conservatives” on FR that make me embarrassed to wear that label, myself.
When one of them starts up with a “ban _____!!!” rant, I cringe.
If I want to hear hysterical crap like that, I’ll go start lurking at DU.
Not that anybody cares, but teenage kids yapping/texting while driving kill *far more* people a year than pit bulls ever could.
Let’s ban them.
Yeah, that was a pretty low point in the breed’s history.
Prior to pit bull popularity, it was always an ‘evil Dobermann’ in the movies/news.
I’ve had them since I was 13 until now [37 years, all total] and my parents are ~still~ scared snotless of them, despite the fact that none of my dogs have ever been less than very friendly and obedient to them.
You can’t teach those who are unwilling to learn.
“These muslims of the dog world, (pit bulls), lovers/owners are just little dick”
Really? I own a pit, a smart, lovable very well behaved pit.
He is trained and not allowed to be an alpha. When I was growing up, I had a collie that attacked any dog or cat itsaw, and bit several people.
My grandparents needed a farm dog and never took the time to train and correct his bad behavior. The neighbor shot him.
Pitties are excellent pets, but they aren’t for everyone.
“not to mention...you can breed a brain lesion? rotflmao...that is so bizarre”
Yeah, really.
[I *am* starting to wonder about an inheritance factor for histrionics in humans, though]
;]
Yep - total BS.
Our vet owns two pits.
