Good morning gardeners. Here in East Central Mississippi the heat has arrived. It was 101 yesterday and is expected to be in the high 90s and pushing 100 for the next week. A heat advisory is effect. My garden is surviving these hot afternoons. Some of my younger plants have needed watering every afternoon. My established tomato, squash and pepper plants have been doing well with a deep soaking of water about every three days. Looks like it is going to be a hot summer.

If you are a gardener or you are just starting out and are in need of advice or just encouragement please feel free to join in and enjoy the friendly discussion. Our Freeper community is full of gardeners, each with varying interests and skill levels from Master Gardener to novice.

Yep The temps dropped from the mid 90s to the high 70s here, as the T-Storms slid to the south of us. We may have got a drop or two nothing to turn a wiper on the windshield for.

I was thinking of my FR friends when I saw the weather report this a.m. Everywhere looked to be in the high 80s and low 90s. Stay cool and don’t overdo in the yard. Oh, I love raw rhubarb, but it doesn’t grow here...too hot.

Me too. There are so many things going on in our small community and out of it, seems I’m here when everyone else has been here or in the evening.

Oh, I wish some rain would pass through our area. My water bill is a bit on the high side. My plants do not like clorinated water, they want rain water. You’re lucky you
know.

Terrible heat the past few days — record breaking. T storm last night and rain expected for th enext few days.

I’ve been planting purchased plants at every break that I can.

QUESTION: Can you use those twist supports to elevate squash?

QUESTION: Can you elevate zucchini on bean poles — the kind that look like a tee pee?

Zucchini is not a climbing plant.

Thank you. Gotta change the support. Perhaps a tomato cage? I thought the object was to get them off the ground?

How large are your Zucchini plants at this time? I ask that question because my Zs formed off the ground. Our temps continue in the high 50s to low 60s and low 50s overnight. Our Farmers Markets started in Benderville last week with one nearby today. These growers “farm” inland where the temps are warmer and many of them grow under hoop houses

I found a book on Amazon about growing what you can on
“trellises”, I’m ordering it and see how it works. The plants in my raised gardens are having a really hard time, but the plants in the pasture are doing beautifully. I’ll read the book and try it.

I think JustaDumbBlonde does a lot of elevated plantings, doesn’t she? I’ll even invest in the cattle thingies, as it looks like what she’s using.

My plants were planted yesterday and are slightly larger than my hand. Temps have dropped today — 97 yesterday to 60 today.

Yes. JADB’s cattle thingies are perfect. Trouble is, I don’t have anyway to get them home from the outdoor store as my truck is not running right now. They are 16 ft. long. Although I could cut them at the store, I don’t have any way to get an 8ft. object home without begging assistance from a neighbor. I’m used to being the one who GIVES assistance. It’s hard to ask for help. ;)

Does the outdoor store offer delivery as our feed store does? Sorry about your temp drop but it’s only fair that you should share our pain. Just got back from the farmers market and got a few beets, carrots and baby Zukes. Also a jar of home canned olives

Well, I’m taking Mr. AFTR to the outdoor store tonight after work and showing him the difference in price between one cattle panel (which is all I need) and half a dozen fancy tomato cages. Perhaps he’ll fix the truck. He tends to tune me out when it comes to the garden. I’ve been yakking about a cattle panel for almost a year now.

Give me the phone number of the outdoor store and I will tell them you are a elderly widow and if they don’t deliver those panels to you I will tell them that I will report all the ADA violations at their store and then I will call a lawyer to sue them for non-compliance and you will own the store and a nice pickup, or something...

You really need to watch Zukes closely they go from finger size to base ball bat or bowling pin size almost over night! Oh, and they know where to hide out of sight of the gardener. They grow near the ground and grow quickly so no need to get them off the ground because you will need to pick them almost as soon as they show up!

Yes there is a new thread every Friday morning. Of course I think all the threads are great - there is a lot of useful and helpful gardening knowledge out there in FR Land.

I got my panel tonight, plus a log swing that I have been begging for for 20 years!

We picked up the panel at the big box store and cut it in 2 with big bolt cutters. Put one half on top of the other half in th ebottom of my friend’s 5 x 8 trailer. Loaded the swing (in a box) on top. Slick as a whistle. Stored it in my barn over night.

I’m so excited. I got enough fence for $22 to make trellises
worth over $200. Thank you, thank you, JADB!

And thanks for the offer to call Fleet Farm, Mr Bender. I needed you tonight when the guys back in the warehouse couldn’t find my swing after the clerks up front sold it to me and took my money. The guys in the back said there were no more swings, except for three that were saved on rain checks. I whimpered that I was there, and I had been waiting 20 years for that swing. But it still took a lot of negotiations to get them to let me take it home, even though I was there with 2 men, 2 cars, and a trailer; and it was csing time with a storm on the way! I even suggested that they let me have the floor model. No dice.

I know that you could have sealed that deal quicker. LOL

Now I have to move quickly because I going to have to transplant all the plants I put in yesterday. I’ll have to try to fool those little buggers that they really haven’t been moved!
