Independence, Mo. (AP) -- Police responding to a rare alligator sighting in suburban Kansas City took quick action to dispatch of the beast, shooting it in the head, as instructed, while it lurked menacingly in the weeds leading down to a pond.

It wasn't until a second rifle shot bounced off the reptile's head that the officers realized they had mortally wounded a concrete lawn ornament.

I’m kind of surprised an entire SWAT team wasn’t called to respond.

They would have accidentally driven their Stryker knockoff into the water, then shot the home owner.

At my last job at the new refinery at Port Aurthur, Texas the first sign you see entering the plant is “ DO NOT FEED OR DISTURB THE ALIGATORS”!

*shrugs*

They’d probably have at least one injury when someone capped their own leg upon noticing the concrete gator.
The self injury, of course, would then be pawned off on the deceased homeowner.

Sheesh, we could write an entire satire article “Satiracle?” about this scenario.

Should have called in the experts.

In my best *Flat* Cajun accent they would have said:
"What the *hellll* you brung us out here *faux*, you dumb bastards"!

This can be easily prevented by giving the cops fake guns.

This is the same type of mentality that causes swat teams to kill do many people and dogs by mistake each year. Shoot first, investigate later.

This is typical action for the Florida Wildlife Commission....always shooting animals that pose no danger.

"They inched up closer and closer..."

How would we get by without such brave, brave men?

"...and discovered it was a mock-up of a real alligator made to look like it was real."

You mean a fake?

In the officers' defense, it was growing dark when they shot the fake gator and it was partially submerged in the weeds.

There's a lesson in there for you, Chief Wiggums.

The property owner told police that the gator was meant to keep people off his property, Gentry said. Officers told him a no-trespassing sign would have been wiser.

I see. The cops show up, shoot a fake gator...twice...then start offering advice.

I'd laugh, if I weren't crying.
