Harddrive Failure Start up menu is empty (No outlook express, no list of program files) but still has My Computer on it.
OS XP Home Pentium R D 2 80GHz
Everyone’s mileage varies.
We are an ISP and those are the products we use.
Even have customers come in and we get em back up.
Fan was just replaced about 6-8 weeks ago. Thank you though
sometimes when a hard drive stops working is because the disk
becomes warped, the cold can temporarely fix the problem.
Stick with unifox on this.
Gotta run and he knows what he is doing.
You’ll be problemo free’o by the end of the day’o.
I have seen NOTHING that fixes everything. NOTHING.
It's why people like you and me have jobs. :-)
I understand. From what I learned, MWB is A tool, not THE tool. A rootkit is far, far damaging that your average malware and usually it’s game over. Combofix, DDS and OTS are better technical tools only if the malware has latched on to so deep in the kernels it’s almost un-removable.
Freezing a hard drive only works if the problem is it overheating cause the internal cooling system isnt working, or something like that.

The best alternative to MWB we discovered is TDSSKILLER by Kaspersky. It’s free and updated weekly by the Kaspersky team. And it worked in many of our deep-kernel infections. When the rookit disabled MWB (PRO VERSION) , I knew this was no ordinary rootkit.
And yes, NOTHING is 100% protection. That’s why Norton, AVG, kaspersky will EVER state that theirs is 100%. It comes down to common-sense web surfing.
See if you can do a system restore first. If that doesn't work you'll need to do a virus cleanup or reinstall your operating system
Do NOT run any hardcore programs (esp ComboFix and SuperAntiSpyware) unless you have someone who knows those programs helping you out. They are pretty powerful and can really damage/kill your software if you don’t know what you are doing.
I would suggest going to an actual site dedicated to fixing this type of stuff and getting them to help you out. The two links I posted are both good sites (I usually use the first one if I can’t figure out a problem, but both are very helpful)

I can’t thank you enough for your help vendome. I’ve read everything sorry I did not respond right away. Keeping fingers and toes crossed here and hopefully can get this going.
Have a great day!
Thank you for that link! I cannot believe I was suckered in and I can’t get rid of the dang XP Recovery Window now. That is what started all this. It looked so authentic and I had been having minor issues so I clicked on the ‘scan’. Lord....what a dingbat

So then Laptop or Desktop, Power off or Restart?
I use the Kaspersky TDSSKLLER as well. The only one that has successfully fixed the search engine redirect virus for me.
I still remember one incident when a re-direct malware ALSO disabled TDSSKILLER, and it was the updated version. Went to safe mode, downloaded it one more time and used it in safe mode to clean the infection which it did.
bump
Yep. Just one tool out of several we use concurrently and for getting rid of the roaches.
