CARRIER LANDING TERROR!
http://www.angelfire.com/ak2/intelligencerreport/carrier1.html ^

This is very unnerving, landing with deck pitching 30 feet, at night, low on fuel. Incredible. You will never forget viewing this. I have seen a lot of aviation videos but the two videos below are undoubtedly the best. Turn on your sound. I guarantee this will definitely hold your attention.

This segment was a part of a 12 one hour series about life on the carrier during one cruise. I saw this several years ago but well remember the stories about many of the people seen in this segment.

The Skipper who made that last landing was retiring at the end of this cruise. The Female Ensign had had a 12 year career as an enlisted. She was divorced. Her ex husband was trying to keep her kids from joining her for the family cruise day.

You fly the VASI meatball and ignore the deck. In some cases the only thing you can see is the meatball until the last few seconds. You trust the LSO will wave you off and trust his judgment when it comes to the fantail.

SONOBUOY PING!

Click on pic for past Navair pings.

Post or FReepmail me if you wish to be enlisted in or discharged from the Navair Pinglist.
The only requirement for inclusion in the Navair Pinglist is an interest in Naval Aviation.
This is a medium to low volume pinglist.

I kid you not, “F”ing PBS has blocked the feed of this video to Chile! Anybody get a YouTube link?

That was the difference in landing a helo on a pitching deck. You just had to time the up & down and make contact with the deck on its way down. Now the Canadians have a system called "Bear trap", where they plug a cable from the deck into the helo and winch you down while you are pulling power.

The other weird thing was landing on something like an LSD or LPD. You had to make the approach at a 45 degree angle. It took effort to ignore the sea flowing by at that 45 degree angle and focus on your flight path relative to the ship, not the sea.

http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=T6Gn3A-6zik

In the above video, notice the relation of the helo to the horizon, not the ship.

I have been saying the same thing.

It’s one thing to build a carrier...it’s quite another to conduct competent flight operations on them.

Ticonderoga CVA 14, Crash n Salvage “Hotsuit.” I’ve been on deck many times with drama like this...scary stuff.

WOW. Gonna send this to a friend that flew A-6 Intruders. He had one really scary night landing where he was called off 8 times. A night he will never forget. Good post.

I was in the Navy in 67 - 70 serving in a Naval Air capacity. I sometimes flew in A-3’s, a mid-50’s fighter/bomber equipped to accomplish our Comms mission. The A-3 sometimes landed on carriers.

Once, we were returning to our base, Danang, when the pilot set down late on the runway and suddenly, we hit a restraining hook, with no foreknowledge. Talk about a shock!

I don’t know if the pilot just needed the monthly training check mark or if he set down too late; probably the former since he was a real cowboy. It was a lot of fun, actually.
