Ok, I realize it's nothing like the incredible crap out there now, but it sure sounds like the basic beginning of rap

“Rap” frequently is considered as having its roots in a rhyming practice of the antebellum South called ‘The Dozens’. In The Dozens what happens is two people face off and make rhymes at each other as some sort of challenge. Rap contests of the latter day frequently play on the model of The Dozens with rappers hurling rhyming insults at each other.

It's the Jubalaires, basically a gospel harmony group like any number of others. You'll probably come closer to the roots of modern rap with Louis Jordan's "Saturday Night Fish Fry"

I beg to differ.

This is not rap.

Rap is more spoken than sung.

This was clearly singing.

And ir sure sounds a lot better than any rap.

You’re right. It can’t be “rap” because:
1. It is sung in tune
2. It has a tune
3. You can understand what they are singing
4. It doesn’t have “f*ck”, “ho”, “bitch”, “cap”, “kill” or any similar words in it.

In other words, this song and group have class, rhythmn, and harmony. And I’ll bet that none of them ended up killed by other singers or went to jail for shooting someone.

Then again, it does have a “reparte’” structure so we can call this “premature rap”, as opposed to “crap”.

That ain't Rap. You can clearly understand every syllable of what they are singing. If you really want to get into the roots of Rap, try listening to any of the late 60's early 70's James Brown. Stuff like the The Payback.

Rap No:

Rap Yes:

Nad by the way, “Rap music” is an oxymoron. It’s a genre of performing art... music, it ain’t.

It's been said that Bob Dylan was close to rap in Subterranean Homesick Blues and there were other songs where the performer would rhythmically speak some lines.

The basic form had been around and then the early rappers used it for whole songs, mostly words and rhythm and little tune or melody.

What??!! Are you serious? The people in video actually had musical talent. They could sing and play their instuments. How could you connect that with rap which requires the performer to merely walk around the stage and curse while talking about fornicating with women and killing policemen?
