Many good people would suggest that a church would be a good place to find a spouse, but that is a very small pool in most cases. About the only alternative for most is work and bar-hopping. These are almost cringe-worthy for their lack of potential.

College is also a good place to find people, but you have to be ready to commit early.

In Israel, women serve in the army, which is also a good place to meet men.

There’s a problem inherent with meeting people in school or the military. It’s that you have something to do, something which you are supposed to occupy your time with.

Even among young children, adults are usually very careful to prevent mixed gender socialization, even with strong chaperoning. And they are the first to try to include tasks, of many descriptions, so that the children “will have something to do”. While the best of these at least pretend to socialize, in truth they are just distractions preventing socialization.

They can’t just be left to do it on their own, either, or the boys and girls will voluntarily segregate, defeating the purpose of the exercise.

One idea, only half in jest, is that once or twice a week, each boy would be connected to a girl with an extended and comfortable handcuff for several hours. Then the next week they would each be connected to a different boy or girl.

This would be called the “The Defiant Ones” exercise, based on the movie of two prisoners shackled together, who have to learn to cooperate to survive.

But the bottom line is that children, like dogs, have to be socialized early on, or else it is very hard for them to ever “work and play well with others”.

I have had two large and friendly dogs that I could never permit around other dogs, solely because they had never been socialized while puppies. They were wonderful around people, but could not relate to other dogs at all, except as enemies.

It pains me to think of now generations of Americans with that problem and worse. Marriage? To who? And how could either of us possibly afford to? Children? I wish! I’d also like to win the lottery so I could afford it all.

Indeed they do have a large pool. What has been interesting to me regarding the 30 or 40 something bachelors that held out all those years ended up marrying a trophy wife once successful. Only to find their trophy wife quickly procreated, divorced and took half their fortunes. Now they come to parties alone, bitter and now well into their late 50’s and 60’s with young children to support.

;D!

That’s just the mindless conventional wisdom, which is extremely prevalent in Minnesota.

I think it's prevalent here in Columbus, Ohio also. We're one of the fattest cities in the nation.

I don’t think we’re on a singles thread. Or if we are, I don’t know how we got here but it certainly is interesting!

Sounds like the almost perfect combination. Is there a Field Manual on file detailing the proper care and maintenance? [grin]

I wish I could say the same. By the time I gained the proper mindset to be a good catch, the warranty on the body ran out . . .

Not exactly, no. But they share so many of the same traits that they’re virtually indistinguishable. And yes, from my experience, someone can be both.

I feel bad for the people who can’t seem to meet decent people.

I also feel very lucky as I listen to these tales of woe.

I think that almost all sociopaths are narcissistic, but not all narcissists are sociopaths.

I also think that it’s best to stay away from both.

“By the time I gained the proper mindset to be a good catch, the warranty on the body ran out...”

I totally ‘get’ that! I have a few men in my life who are in their 70’s...who, if they were in their 50’s would be AWESOME considerations at this point in MY life. :)

I’ll enjoy them anyway. There’s always something to learn along the way. And there’s a LOT to be said for spending your time with someone who ‘gets’ you and is a great conversationalist.

I mean, in reality, what AM I going to DO with a man for the other 23 hours of the day? LOL! :)

That's what I did, got married while I was still in college. Still married 15 yrs later! :)

I was single into my early thirties but was fortunate enough to marry a good woman. She’s conservative (way more than me which I get a kick out of), likes guns, strong Christian.

Hey, hold on there...

First you say, “averagely attractive,”

Then you say, “loves to hunt & fish, possesses a positive ‘can-do’ attitude, and is a political clone of Margaret Thatcher...”

That description alone moves you way above average! That, plus you are on my ping list puts you in the top 5%!

;-)
