Teacher allegedly refused to hang up picture

ORANGE, Mass. (WWLP) - A civil rights controversy is brewing at an elementary school in the Town of Orange, and it all surrounds an11 year-old's drawing of the American Flag.

The family of Frankie Girard is claiming that their son's civil rights were violated after a teacher allegedly told him that hanging his picture of the American flag would offend another student.

The Butterfield Elementary School is at the center of controversy for the incident on Monday. According to Frankie Girard’s father, John, the boy was in art class drawing a picture.

"He was denied hanging the flag up. And, he asked if he could just even hang it on his desk, and he was told no. He could take the picture that he drew and take it home and be proud of it there,” Girard said.

So, that is where it is, among the hundreds of other family pictures and military honors that adorn the walls of the Girard family home.

Anyone who is offended by the U.S. Flag should be forced to move to a country with a different flag.

This teacher should be fired.

UNBELIEVABLE! But not really surprising. Nothing surprises me anymore.

If we can’t show a picture of an American flag because somebody will be offended, then this country as we knew it is finished.

Of course if a kid drew a homosexual rainbow flag, that would be okay.

Political correctness could be the death of America as we know her.

Publish that teacher's e-Mail.

And the School Principal's.

And the names of the kid who "objected's" parents.

I read the article earlier and got the impression from those quoted and from comments to the article that the boy’s picture was not an assignment (???). There appears to be some conflict in the retelling of events.

I'm sure the flag of an Islamic country would have been fine, too.

“22News tried to contact the Superintendent, Dr. Paul Burnim. He refused to go on camera, but told 22News over the phone that nobody ever told Franklin the drawing was offensive, and said the only reason it wasn’t hung was because Franklin was supposed to be doing other work; not drawing a picture. In a statement he said: “Each of our schools flies the American Flag every day. At the Butterfield School, the Pledge of Allegiance is recited by students and staff. And the other schools recite the Pledge of Allegiance at least once per week.””

If true, this raises the question—what was the other assignment that the kid was supposed to be working on?

... seems to be some conflict of stories here. If it was a doodle and not apart of the current assignment, I can understand the, no we are not going to hang it up. If you did that as a policy, a student could “ditch” an assignment in class by drawing instead of working. Moral hazard and all.

According to the Superintendent he was supposed to working on something else rather than drawing in class. Sounds like father is either over-reacting or trying to gin something up.

This is a post from the site that is carrying the story via Drudge. It sounds like they have personal knowledge. If true the teacher has some explaining to do.

Not the case here......More than the Supt. should be interviewed, more than one person has said he was told it was "religiously offensive" and not allowed to hang it for that reason, and that reason alone. Frankie is a good kid, plays sports, stays out of trouble, and the whole story of drawing while he was supposed to be doing school work is a flat out lie! He was in art class, during "free draw". Why do you think the Supt. responded by phone and declined to show is face on TV??? Hmmmmmm.....could it be he knows he screwed up big time??? Dad is an ex Marine, and current Little League coach, so I'm pretty sure he knows about discipline!!

Bears repeating. Goofing off is goofing off. Rewarding that sort of thing is why we have so many self-entitled little brats running things now.
