A civil rights controversy is brewing at an elementary school in the Town of Orange, and it all surrounds an11 year-old's drawing of the American Flag.
The family of Frankie Girard is claiming that their son's civil rights were violated after a teacher allegedly told him that hanging his picture of the American flag would offend another student.
The Butterfield Elementary School is at the center of controversy for the incident on Monday. According to Frankie Girards father, John, the boy was in art class drawing a picture.
"He was denied hanging the flag up. And, he asked if he could just even hang it on his desk, and he was told no. He could take the picture that he drew and take it home and be proud of it there, Girard said.
So, that is where it is, among the hundreds of other family pictures and military honors that adorn the walls of the Girard family home.
According to his father, the teacher told Frankie that his drawing of the American Flag would offend one of his classmates. "Were allowing him to display his civil rights and be proud of who he is, but were denying Franklin those same rights," Girard said.

wow,,
Jerks like this school superintendent and staff are what cause other people around the country to shake their heads in disbelief and demand the entire state and everyone in it be quarantined or incinerated.
Not everyone around here is like these turkeys (as the one woman being interviewed illustrates) but this crap is all anyone ever sees. I hate the politics and school systems in this state. They ARE run by Leftists.
I’ll bet they would let him draw and display a picture of Obama, though.
Two words.
Home + School.

It goes without saying that the classmate would not be so offended if little Frankie drew a picture of a MEXICAN flag.
Exactly. Home-school if possible. In a generation, the gap in success levels should be a factor in future political campaigns.
That so-called teacher needs a good beating and deportation.
Flippin' marxist, American hating liberal!!
Ah, Massachusetts, that explains a lot.
Does the school also refrain from flying the American flag outside the building so as not to offend said student?
Maybe Franklin wasn't displaying his pride in who he is, maybe Franklin is displaying pride in his country.
Is the teacher not proud of the country for which the flag stands?

Where is this school, and how do we contact the school and the school board?
Every time this state does something right some asshat takes it two steps backwards.
Welcome to Assachusetts.
From the article....
22News tried to contact the Superintendent, Dr. Paul Burnim. He refused to go on camera, but told 22News over the phone that nobody ever told Franklin the drawing was offensive, and said the only reason it wasn’t hung was because Franklin was supposed to be doing other work; not drawing a picture. In a statement he said: “Each of our schools flies the American Flag every day. At the Butterfield School, the Pledge of Allegiance is recited by students and staff. And the other schools recite the Pledge of Allegiance at least once per week.”

I - upthread - jumped to the conclusion that this was yet another exhibition of anti-Americanism in our public schools. It’s way too easy to make that assumption.
But. I can see that if little Frankie was goofing off, then yeah. This is not an issue of being denied the right to hang a flag drawing in the classroom.
It’s possible that Frankie and his family are crying foul, just to deflect the heat away from them.
Now. Having said that.... Back to public school bashing.
Oh and another thing. My son has been bringing and reading conservative books to school. His latest is Savage’s “Liberalism is a Mental Disorder”. He bought it with his own money too.
We’re just waiting for some asshat to make something out of it at the school.
That teacher offends me. I still want to hang the teacher.
In Massachusetts there is a flag in every classroom and the Pledge of Allegiance is said every day. It is state law.
This story makes no sense.
“Teachers” are paid to much for what little they do...
