LeBron James says he's sorry for using the word "retarded" in a postgame news conference.
The Miami Heat star muttered the word after Game 3 of the Eastern Conference semifinals as he and Dwyane Wade listened to a question about Wade's takedown of Boston guard Rajon Rondo.
James had his hand covering his mouth when he said "that's retarded" as a reporter asked Wade whether the play that dislocated Rondo's elbow was dirty.
After Game 4 on Monday night, James opened his postgame comments by apologizing for using "the R-word."

Is it alright if you say “That comment was R-Word”.
You may have found the question retarded but many of us saw your teammate’s action as ghetto....
BTW, LeBron, your Mom and Delonte still throwing down?
So, if a fully-functioning journalist asks a stupid question, and someone responds "That's retarded" -- exactly who jumps to the thought that people with special needs have just been insulted??
For my money, the people who are PC are the people who are quickest to engage in the type of thought that they themselves despise.
That’s retarded.
The word “retarded” has legitimate descriptive use. It refers to something that has not met it’s full growth potential.
It can be used callously, crudely, as an insult, or as a put down, but it is not a word that exists outside of a real meaning that is clearly defined.
I hate political correctness for the damage it has done to language and communication. It’s ridiculous and retards the vocabulary of people.
Because it's James, though, I hope the PC police lynch him. Metaphorically, of course.
“Retarded” means mental or physically delayed. So if you think a question is retarded, then its deficient of intellectual response.
Makes sense to me.
LeBron is still a thug, but this is ridiculous with how we’ve watered down the language.
Do you think Lebron would quietly accept anyone else’s use of the “N” word? It is blacks who promoted the use of politically correct speech, now they can live with it.
Allen pulled Rondo down b/c 1. Rondo had a hold of Allen as well, 2. Allen was trying to get the foul call on Rondo. It wasn't "ghetto" and he wasn't trying to dislocate Rondo's arm.
A simple response of, “Is that a ^serious^ question?” directed to the simpering media beotch would have been sufficient.
These guys need media consultants (I’m available...)
I don’t think it’s fair to call LeBron a thug. He’s never done anything thuggish, and never been in trouble with the law. He’s actually a good kid.
But he is totally full of himself, and, for an aspiring global icon, doesn’t have a lot of media savvy.
It was not a dirty play.
Well the Heat better know the Mavs are coming, and revenge is a dish best served cold.
I get your point, but I wouldn’t say that not using the N word is bowing to political correctness.
I can accept someone using the word “retard”. I don’t accept people using the N word (black or white).
Subsitute Wade for Allen.
I’m a Dallas native currently living in LA.
Last week was the best week of my life (basketball wise), watching the Mavs b-slap the Fakers, and shut these silly, fair-weather Lakers fans the hell up.
Go Mavs! Bring on the Heat.
Yes, LeBron needs some serious media training. Nothing made that more apparent than “The Decision.”
Still, it was a retarded question. Technically.
