Intel Announces first 22nm 3D Tri-Gate Transistors, Shipping in 2H 2011

Earlier this week Intel sent us a cryptic message:

I wanted to invite you to an Intel press conference on Wednesday May 4th at 9:30am Pacific time. Intel will be making its most significant technology announcement of the year. No further details will be provided in advance. The event will be held in San Francisco so for those of you are local in the SF Bay Area please attend in person if you like. It will also webcasted live. Tune-in details and logistics are below. Please let me know if you can attend.

A while ago Intel decided that a nice way to drive up its stock price would be to behave more like Apple, keeping major announcements under wraps and introducing them on its own terms to hopefully build up anticipation and excitement for Intel's announcements. You've seen examples of this with how closely Intel held Sandy Bridge's architectural details before its presentation at IDF, and how little we knew about Quick Sync (Sandy Bridge's hardware video transcoder) until Intel decided it was time to talk about it.

Apple can get away with it since most of its products are tangible, consumer facing devices. Intel's technologies are arguably even more important, but they're just not as easy for the general populace to get excited about. Today's announcement is the perfect example of just that.

Ernie, I am so tired I am barely typing. Perhaps I will finally get a good nights rest. Interesting article I assure you. Sort of up my old alley of expertise. This new promoted tri-gate technology looks like it can be quite meaningful in progressing beyond the current level of Si MOS IGFET technologies.
With that. I am sure we shall hear more about it in the days to come. So my friend. With that, let me wish you a great upcoming day. I am going to hit the rack.

You say things meant to confuse (people with different interests) and leave. How convenient. This is extraordinary. How high can they go?

It's late in Philly...

I am on the West Coast and it is past my bedtime.

Looks like (according to the closing remarkes ) this could show up in an Atom processors for the smartphone market...

ARM has competition.,,,it would seem.

Still binary. This is just a smaller footprint transistor, in plan view (viewed from "above").

There have been papers about this for years. Looks like Intel finally got a process to do it.

I know you were casting about for the graphic for the ping list lately, and I don’t mind the current one. I DO find however, that due probably to both the mental connotation of the graffiti-ish font as well as its imprecision, I read it as “TACO PING” half the time. FYI.

[DISCLAIMER: Presumably as conservatives none of y’all jumped to this conclusion, but no, I’m not saying that anyone who enjoys or makes tacos is presumably a vato with his pants on the ground, looking like a fool, type guy. However I lived in (near) East LA, and while I like a good taco as much as the next guy, I come by my associations honestly.]

Sorry to hear that E. I keep putting off going for an eye exam.. I do know I have a cataract building up on one eye and the other that already has an old lens replacement is getting foggy. I'm paying quite a bit for COBRA I might as well try to at least get new glasses if it would help.
But the wavy lines must drive you nuts sometimes. No response required, just acknowledging your vision impairment.
