NEW YORK -- Phoebe Snow, a singer, guitarist and songwriter whose song ''Poetry Man'' was a defining hit of the 1970s, has died.

Rick Miramontez, her longtime friend and public relations representative, says Snow died Tuesday morning. He says she died of complications from a brain hemorrhage she suffered in January 2010.

God Bless her. I loved "Poetry Man"; I'm a big fan of that kind of music. We went to see Jackson Browne at a small concert in Mobile AL, in 1973 or 74, before he'd really hit the big time. I can't even remember who opened for him, but the next night, at his concert in New Orleans, it was Phoebe Snow. Hate that we missed that one.

I remember reading about it when her daughter was born, and she gave up her big singing career. IIRC, her husband left her, just after the baby was born, so she was truly on her own.

RIP, Phoebe.

From an article just three days ago:

Bible-based cookbook offers soul food

Just when you think that every possible idea for a cookbook has been exhausted, along comes Sue Cameron.

She found a way to merge her passions — faith and food — in "The New Bible Cookbook: God's Food for Thought, Nourishment for the Soul."

Two years ago, she was working with singer Phoebe Snow ("Poetry Man"), who was planning a comeback tour after a long hiatus, during which she was caring for her disabled adult daughter. Six weeks before Snow's opening date, she suffered a debilitating stroke. Fifteen months later, she remains in a coma.

"It was devastating," Cameron says. "Phoebe is an extraordinary person with the most beautiful voice. To have this happen, after she put her life on hold for so many years, was crushing."

Losing her friend and her client was a double blow to Cameron. She says she put her energies into completing the cookbook, relying on prayer and God's strength to see her through. Unlike her other books, she had to dip into her savings to publish it on her own, spending about $6,000.

I remember her well. My parents liked her. Prayers.

I ‘had’ been a HUGE Creedence fan until Top 40 decided to play them to death! Nearly 40 years later my wife and I were walking around a small group of restaurants trying to decide where to eat. We walked into one and the opening guitar riffs to “Around the Bend” came blasting through the air. I grabbed my wife's arm and said, “somewhere else.”

Top 40 radio has left me feeling like Pavlov's dog for lots of songs from that era!

My favorite song of hers was a duet with Paul Simon; “Gone at Last”.

I held the world record for channel change (2.7 nanoseconds). I credit this song with helping me set that record!
Even worse is Debbie Boone's - You Light Up My Life.
Caterwauling at its worst.

An unusual, one might say, idiosyncratic talent. I think she was simply born with the seed of that arresting style.

Her life had ups and downs prior to the birth of her daughter, too.

I meant to add that she adopted the stage name "Phoebe Snow" (her legal given name was already Phoebe) after the iconic lady used in advertising by the Lackawanna Railroad.

I was going to let Willie Green mention this, but then I realized it would be up to me.

A lovely voice and some beautiful songs, and it also sounds like a lovely soul as well. RIP and prayers for the family.

That is by far the weirdest group I have seen. Railroading and gays. Wow.

Thankfully I was spared that one. By then my economic situation had improved to allow me an 8-track AND an FM radio. Most of my scars are from the early 70’s when poverty forced me to chose between Top 40 and silence. Eeeesh!
