The Power of P90X
Men's Health ^ | December 18, 2010 | Joe Kita

Tony Horton used to be a stand-up comedian. Now he's the front man for P90X and a millionaire exercise guru. So is he an infomercial salesman? Or a fitness savior?

*****

Beyond the compelling marketing, there are two reasons why P90X is so popular. First, Horton is the perfect front man. At 5´10* and 180 pounds with 9 percent body fat, he is genuinely ripped. He says he can consecutively do 110 pushups, 80 dips, 35 pullups, and eight 260-pound lat pulls. Plus, he can hold a handstand for a minute and even do a backflip off a wall. To prove it, he often drops to the floor and pumps out a few reps of whatever exercise he's talking about. His motto, which he wears on the back of his shirt, is "Bring It!" Along with the brawn, he has a full head of hair and—even under the harsh QVC makeup lights—no telltale signs of any nips or tucks. And, to the delight of the housedress set, he's not married.

But second, and most important, P90X—unlike the garbage heap of other "miracle" infomercial products—can deliver results. That's because it's built on such proven fitness principles as consistency, intensity, and variety, and you don't need special gadgets—just a pullup bar and dumbbells (or resistance bands). Simply pop a disc into your DVD player, move the couch out of the way, and follow along with Tony and his gang.

I can’t tell you if 90X is good or not.

But I can tell you that working as intensely as possible, for as long as possible is the most effective exercise for becoming fit.

In principle, intensity builds fitness and endurance burns calories.

I’m glad it works for you. Do you have any tips for someone about to start doing P90x? What helped you succeed?

Do it. I was in shape to begin with, but lost another shirt size and dropped down to a 34 waist. I nearly set a record for the PRT sit up score.

Push play everyday! If you are not used to getting exercise, you half to change your mental outlook and follow the work out plan. I have never followed the diet plan, but I have changed my own diet to include better food and not eat garbage.

None.:)

I knew nothing about steroids or anything at the time.

High intensity training works, but it takes a lot of getting used to.

If I were advising somebody who wanted to learn to train intensely, don’t expect to be able to do an entire workout at high intensity at first. it may take months to get used to it.

Has anyone on Free Republic done any of the other Beachbody programs (Insanity, etc)? If so, what are your thoughts?

Basic breathing exercises work better than chemical injections.

I’m currently on day 60 of P90x. I wouldn’t say it will get me ripped like Tony and I haven’t lost a whole lot of weight (6 pounds) but I have better definition and it has made me much stronger overall. It is exactly what I needed to get stronger for some scrambling and climbing up mountains this summer. I’ll likely do a second round late in the year.

It sounds like your approach to fitness is more in line with Matt Furey. I’m glad that works for you.

That is not a very good looking Adonis. I would like to hope I look a tad better than that.

The workouts alter from weight to cardio every other day. I dont follow the diet plan they provide, but I do switch to eating more salads and vegetables, as well as cut out alot of carbs.

I have insanity. I can run 5 miles in under 45 minutes, but Insanity has kicked my ass so far (just started last week).

I have a good friend who got very ripped up just doing P90x so maybe I should have bought that insread of Insanity.

It sounds like P90X to build muscle, Insanity to lose body mass and then relax while watching Charlene Johnson.

I did P90 Master Series and lost 40 lbs of fat and got a 6 pack for the first time in my life. Diet is about 70% of the equation. If you do the workouts and don’t change your diet, you won’t see much. Give your body the right fuel and you’ll get ripped in no time.

Steroids do work. It’s why bodybuilders take them.

Aside from shrinkage issues, they work.

I would never take them myself. I’d rather bench 200 lbs, knowing that I worked hard to be able to do that, rather than 500 lbs knowing that I had help doing and had future health problems as a consequence.

I agree; I would rather have functional muscle gained through exercise than fake bulky muscles gained through any steroid.
