An official at Tokyo Electric Power Co., the operator of the crippled Fukushima Daiichi nuclear power plant, admitted Wednesday that fuel of the plant's No. 1 reactor could be melting.

Yikes. I said March 8th and should have said the spike started on April 8th.

It will only seem like a info re status change to those of us who were not aware that reactor 1 may not be cooled sufficiently to thwart melting. I’ve been seeing all the aftershocks those poor folks have been having and kept hearing that the nuke situation was ‘static’ but if fuel is indeed melting then reactor 1 is not static.
I thought it already melted???? It is Hot! Hot! Hot! Evrybody feelin. Hot! Hot! Hot!.
I thought it already melted (past tense) and ceased to do so but this article indicates that it may have resumed melting (present tense) due to a spike in sv/hr starting April 8th. With all the aftershocks, I can imagine things shift around a bit.

The government has decided to prohibit people from entering areas within a 20-kilometer radius of the crippled Fukushima nuclear power plant, starting midnight Thursday, government sources said Wednesday.
Prime Minister Naoto Kan will announce the decision to designate the zone, already covered by an evacuation directive following the March 11 earthquake and tsunami, as an off-limits area when he visits Fukushima Prefecture on Thursday, the sources said.
The government has already started conveying the decision to municipalities concerned, including Minamisoma and Futaba, they said.

But the temperature inside reactor 1's core surged to 260 degrees at midnight Thursday from 223 as of 7 p.m. before the aftershock. The cause of the rise was not immediately known, Tokyo Electric Power Co. said.
The temperature went down to 246.6 as of 1 p.m. Friday, according to NISA.
I think the chart for reactor does not ‘stop’ on the 8th. It’s more like it ‘goes’ on the 8th. I think on that date, the readings for reactor 1 ‘go’ straight up and off the chart (capacity of their sensors to provide a reading) and rather than say list ‘off the chart’ or ‘unkown’ or ‘100plus’ etc., they leave it blank.

Which “fuel” is my question.......
Its already known there are issues with the “spent fuel pools” in several units. They are probably responsibe for much of cadmimum discharge seen.......
Not familiar with these units as built. Pure water can’t “carry” any radioactivity. That comes from impurities introduced by the plant/operations. Adding sea water - with all of its burden of life/solutes increases the liklihood of increased contaminants/rad levels. >JH
Reactor 1 - 27.5 % of the Fuel Rods in Reactor 1 are exposed to atmosphere. About 1.65 Meters of rods.
Reactor 2 - 35.0 % of the Fuel Rods in Reactor 2 are exposed to atmosphere. About 2.10 Meters of rods. That exposure increased by 10 % on April 17th 2011
Reactor 3 - 37.5 % of the Fuel Rods in Reactor 3 are exposed to atmosphere. About 2.25 Meters of rods.
