I agree with you wholeheartedly. I was in high school when alternative took over, and people forget how much of a watershed moment it was. A lover of 80s metal myself (Metallica, Maiden, Priest Megadeth, etc.), this change was almost instantaneous. It was like who are these bands that DONT play guitar solos and play three chords, and go up on stage in street clothes with no lighting/effects, and then just whine into the microphone, and people LOVE them? They just came out of nowhere. And itd be like Iron who? I couldnt stand it, and it was amazing how many people seemed brainwashed by the new sound. The lack of musicianship is what drove me nuts. Not to say that there werent good ones, but most groups seemed to be popular regardless of their level of playing proficiency. When the Grunge thing began to hit, I was in my sophomore year of college. I remember one of my friends had gotten Nirvana's first Album and would play it over and over. I wouldn't go as far as saying I hated it then, it was something different, not really my thing, but whatever. I thought they would be a flash in the pan, one-hit wonder and that would be it. Within a year, I find my self in some bizarro world where this crap has taken over the airwaves, MTV, everything and the music I grew up with is relegated to the late night play list. Perhaps it is a bit childish of me to hate them just for that reason, and it really was one of the first big "life lessons" I learned right out of my teenage years. Which was, Things change, people change, even music changes and you can never truly go back to the way things were no matter how much you might like to. Sometimes that's good, sometimes its bad and sometimes, in cases like this, it just really, really, sucks.

One of my favorite of Al’s many parodies. He’s the true musical genius. ;-)

Ding! Winner chicken dinner! Dave Grohl, who as many know was Nirvana’s drummer, took things far beyond what they accomplished.
I do like Nirvana’s stuff, don’t get me wrong. It’s just ridiculous that they’re worshiped like they are when they borrowed from numerous punk and garage band influences.
Give me the Ramones, Buzzcocks, Dead Kennedys or the Foo any day of the week.

It was great to see Dave drumming again on QOTSA’s “No One Knows.”

I guess I'm to old for this thread. I remember standing in line to buy The Beatles “Abbey Road” and buying “Who's Next” and “Aqualung” off the rack in the record store.
*SIGH*

It showed in his music and in his life. Everytime I hear Nirvana, I hear Aberdeen. That music was the cry of hundreds of kids coming of age in Grays Harbor County, Wa to realize their were no more logging jobs for them, no more jobs in the fishing industry and their parents hippy/environmental wacko generation had literally driven their kids futures away.Nirvanas music was the cry of that generation. It was rebellion against depression. In typical Liberal fashion though, Cobain blamed all the depression and hopelessness on Reagan.

There’s a couple of problems with trying to say Cobain was a genius changed rocked forever. The first is that Nirvana was nowhere near the first grunge band, they were the first to hit really big, but Soundgarden and others had been kicking around for quite a while before these bands started getting signed by the bigs. The second is the Foo Fighters pretty solidly prove Cobain wasn’t the most talented member of Nirvana.
Then of course there’s the cycle of history, 20 odd years later I never listen to Nirvana anymore, listened to Alice in Chains earlier today, some Soundgarden last week, but Nirvana has just kind of disappeared. Loved them when they came out, but they’ve aged right into the “oh yeah I remember them” box.

Grunge didn’t kill hair metal, grunge filled the void the already dead hair metal had made. By the time grunge hit all the hair guys were over 30, getting fat, going bald, most of them were getting off the booze and drugs, the rest were getting arrested and wrecking their cars. Hair metal had run its course, right into the ditch.

I would agree, if only I knew what the hell the words he was singing were. Like 'Smells Like Teen Spirit'?
Yeah, the words didn't make a lick of sense, but it did sound very good.
