Android Is Destroying Everyone, Especially RIM -- iPhone Dead In Water
Business Insider ^ | 04/02/2011 | Henry Blodget

Posted on 04/02/2011 5:13:40 PM PDT by SeekAndFind

Google's Android OS has gained an astonishing 7 points of market share in the US smartphone market in the past three months, Comscore says.

RIM's market share over the same period collapsed, dropping almost 5 points.

Apple's share increased slightly, but is dead in the water and has now fallen way behind Android. Android now has a third of the US market (33%). RIM's share has plummeted to 29%. Apple is holding at 25%. In the "also ran" category, Microsoft's Windows Phone 7 did nothing to stop its decline, which fell from 9% to 7.7%. And Palm, which is barely worth mentioning anymore, fell another point to 2.8%.

Why do the Android gains matter? Are Apple bulls right that Apple has an insurmountable hold on the "premium" segment of the market and that it doesn't matter who has the other 75%?

The Android gains matter because technology platform markets tend to standardize around a single dominant platform (see Windows in PCs, Facebook in social, Google in search). And the more dominant the platform becomes, the more valuable it becomes and the harder it becomes to dislodge. The network effect kicks in, and developers building products designed to work with the platform devote more and more of their energy to the platform. The reward for building and working with other platforms, meanwhile, drops, and gradually developers stop developing for them

Just bring it over. The first install is primitive and requires electric hammer installation. I’ll do it for you. LOL

You hit the nail on the head when you said that they’ll do everything to get your business but not much to retain it. That’s how Sprint got me - they offered the best Android phone (at the time) and AT&T was late to the game.

AT&T had become iPhone-centric, and all their other offerings were low to medium end phones. Combined with the service quality, it wasn’t hard to leave at all.

Now that there’s so much competition, it’s gotten very interesting, and very rewarding for the end user.

I had a Samsung Moment with Android, I absolutely hated it.
Not sure whether I had a bad phone or Android OS was not quite right. In either event that phone never worked right, slow to boot up, programs slow, etc..
Finally decided to try a Blackberry Style and I love it, easy to use, great programs and best of all connects to the computer for easy downloads.
I would not sell RIM short just yet.

By the way, I’ve heard great things about the Droid X, including it’s toughness. I have dropped my EVO once, but it was okay.

I could never go smaller than a 4.3” screen now. I love FReeping from my phone!

Sounds good just as long as there is someone available to hold my beer during installation!

I own an old sony-erickson. Terrible phone, but good enough for now. How many conservatives are willing to give up cable and televison? The dollars that flow to the left through them are enormous....but we say we have to have our sports, etc.

I don’t miss either one. Broadband and netflix suffice.

is there a way to ensure “big google” does not track your activity on your smartphone?

windows phone 7 seems a marketshare dud.

iphone is just apple. (but the stock keeps climbing)
