My father had an unknown co-worker that stole food from him. He used Phenolphthalein to test water quality where he worked. Phenolphthalein is also a strong laxitive (used to be used in Ex-Lax IIRC). He put a few drops on a sandwich.

Later that day it was very easy for him to identify the culprit.
