No NFL? Pac-12 Will Consider Sunday Football Games

With a hungry audience trained to watch football on Sundays, some members of the college football world are considering the possibilities of filling that void in the event of a continued lockout.

Pac-12 commissioner Larry Scott has been working to increase the national attention on the conference, erasing some of the “east coast bias.” Rivals’ Tom Dienhart is reporting that Scott has considered moving some games to Sunday should there be no NFL season.

“We certainly are monitoring the situation,” Scott said. “We have no plans in place at this time, but you want to be prepared and consider all options. Still, these labor situations have a way of getting done the closer they get to a critical situation.”

There are several obstacles that Scott would face, mostly having to do with the existing television deals. In the past, networks have taken original programming from their vault to fill space suddenly left vacant by a sporting event. It would be extremely difficult for the Pac-12 to put together new deals on such short notice, particularly if Scott is talking about capturing a national audience. But if there really is no NFL season in September, viewers might embrace the bonus college football. It’s not a bad thing for Scott and other commissioners to consider, but the contractual obligations seem difficult to pull off on such short notice.

...in the event of a continued lockout.

Perhaps we (potentially former) fans should consider locking out the remainder of the decade to the whiny millionaires who play for profit.

Yeah, give up the money of the NFL to the so-called “for the students” NCAA. There is not a more corrupt bunch of people in the world. Ask anyone that has worked with the NCAA, and they will tell you that its worse than working for the mafia. At least the mafia’s rules make sense.

I would rather give my money to the NFL. At least they are up front and honest about being greedy bastards.

To be honest, I would love to see more college ball on Sundays. To many very good games get lost on Sundays.

College games on the sabbath? Just turn the NCAA over to gambling and alcohol now and NFL can be eliminated..

I've got no problem with profit.

that would absolutely suck for the players. It would add a full day to their work week, because there is no way they are not going to be practicing on Saturday if they play Sunday. The other team will be. It makes claiming to be student even more ludicrous.

College games on Sunday - GREAT! Why not, even if the overpaids are on. I’ll take college every time.

Sunday is the day to study while nursing the hangover from Saturday night's parties.

When the NFL started talking about a player lockout, I stated that the colleges would start playing on Sundays, and if the NFL doesn't work something out, the colleges WILL figure out a way to get it done.

This could be a big problem for the NFL, and would significantly reduce their bargaining ability with the networks. The networks already have problems with the way the NFL worked the contract so that they get paid even if there aren't games, and I could easily see the SEC or the Pac 12 working out a network deal for a couple of Sunday games each week.

College and pro ball always had a "gentlemen's agreement" that the NFL wouldn't play on Saturday until the college season was over and the colleges wouldn't play on Sunday. I've been wondering how long it would take for that agreement to fall through. It's more and more about money now, and even if the NFL works out the labor agreement, what's to stop ABC (ESPN) or NBC from carrying college ball on Sundays, when Fox and CBS have their games? If the NFL made any moves to block them, talk about an anti-trust violation (yeah, I know the NFL has an anti-trust exemption, but there are a lot of congressmen that would love to see that go away.)

The sabbath is not Sunday. The Sabbath runs from Friday at sundown to Saturday at sundown.

Sunday is referred to as The Lord’s Day in the New Testament.

They should have 3 of the best college games on Sunday and one on Monday. This drama is unnecessary the pros can go play in Canada and the owners can go to hell.

Eff the NFL!!

I’m sorry, I love football, but Eff them!

These people often make more in a single season than many people make in their ENTIRE LIFE!!

And it ain’t enough for them or the owners?

How many times have our taxes gone up to pay for the stadium monstrosities they demand?

Eff them.
