Secret of time travel could be unlocked by the Large Hadron Collider, scientists claim

It's long been the stuff of science fiction fantasy but time travel could be a real possibility say scientists.

Furthermore, they believe the 17-mile-long Large Hadron Collider (LHC) based underground near Geneva holds the key.

The theory is that the world’s biggest atom smasher might be able to unleash the Higgs singlet - a particle that could appear before the collision that produced it.

The mind-boggling theory is that it will have entered from another dimension.

There are a few obstacles in the way, however.

Yanking quantum particles from another dimension sounds like a prescription for trouble to me. It kind of reminds me of the story behind the game ‘Half-Life’. I hope the result isn’t the same.

Those look like the old Clover Valley Lumber Co. steam locomotives stored near Fremont, California.

The secret: you can’t change the present by altering the past.

How do we know that the HIGGS Singlet wasn’t the experiment and the rest happened in the future?

What we do know: Big money spent on frivolity.

Does a person start living the high life before or after he gets a tenured position at CERN?

Big Science -- particle physics, tokamak fusion research -- is to science what Public Broadcasting is to mass media. Brain dead elitism.

If there is no fixed future then time travel is impossible, bvw. Simple logic. Clock King is correct.

Travel into the past requires a fixed future from the perspective of that destination past. Travel to the future by it’s very nature requires a fixed future.

Therefore, time travel to the past cannot alter the present or future. If it’s possible, it’s already happened, looking backward in time, and destined to happen, looking forward in time.

Put some liberals in the machine and watch them get transported to the future into Hades.

I was under the impression that this secret was already unlocked by Rocky and Bullwinkle.

Put Terry Gilliam in charge of all the Time Travel stuff. He'll get it right!

I believe that assumes that there is only one reality.

If time travel is possible, all paradoxes and related issues disappear by the creation of a new and modified reality. Time travel involves both movement in time and across the boundary into another reality. The original reality still exists just you or the time traveling element is no longer a part of it from that point forward in time. The time traveler now exists in a new and different universe that is uniquely shaped by his/her presence and can never return to or affect the original. Any attempt to do so only creates yet another alternative reality.

I think time travel and the concept of multiple or infinite alternate universes is intertwined. Sort of like mass and energy - E=mc^2. Time travel is creating a new reality. Crossing into another reality is a form of time travel.

Just some thoughts on the subject. I do believe that the universe is vastly more strange and complex than we can imagine or measure.

What you’re describing is not time travel, sjmjax. Linear time is implicit only in a single reality. It’s mooted by a multiplicity of them.

If time travel to the past were possible, I’m pretty sure someone from he future would have shown up somewhere in history with legitimate proof.

That would be a violation of temporal paradox law, a serious offense.

Fixed? Senseless adjective in the context.

Fixed past? What does that mean? Fixed future is meaningless.
