Is that you Caesar?

Nah, not that dog.
The ears are flattened in appeasement, not back. The grin is also an appeasement gesture. Labs do this pretty frequently, I think it may be imitative of a human smile.
When my alpha female enforces order in the pack with the bared teeth, it's one side only, and it's accompanied with a completely different posture, ears, and head angle.
It's pretty funny when she tries it on the cat when the cat gets in her space, the cat is completely oblivious to the lip lift. Dog then barks at the cat (the cat gets THAT message).
A fearful Lab looks quite different. The slink to the kennel is exactly what my dog does when she's sent there . . . not fear but "aw . . . do I have to?"

He should have eaten the bag as well. Well, evidence appears to show the suspect attempted to eat the bag, but was possibly surprised by the homeowner arriving home.

My Australian Cattledog-Kelpie mix also grins from time to time, especially when I first get home.

I got to go with the others on this. The dog was completely submissive. That was a grin.
A few dogs do that. I knew an Irish Setter that would grin while his whole body wiggled.
Of course, I have an English Mastiff puppy (180+lbs.) He just looks sheepish and farts.
