It's good to go green on St. Paddy's Day, but not with the color of your beer

Even though green beer will flow freely today, one of the biggest drinking holidays of the year, few beer connoisseurs understand its appeal. "I don't knock people who drink green beer," says Kieran Folliard, who owns four Irish pubs — Liffey in St. Paul, Cooper in St. Louis Park and Kieran's and the Local in Minneapolis. "But to be quite honest, I wouldn't drink it unless I was stuck in the desert and it was the only thing around." Sean O'Byrne, who opened Great Waters Brewing Co. 15 years ago today, won't touch the stuff for any reason. "Never have, never will," says O'Byrne. "I'm Irish, and I consider drinking green beer a mortal sin."

It somehow seems against the spirit of the Bible to have a patron saint of getting sloshed.

Why would you assume getting sloshed is the necessary end result?

Beer was far safer to drink in the Middle Ages than water. Maybe it would help if you thought of St Paddy as the Patron Saint of healthy living.

It’s only food coloring and doesn’t change the taste of the beer in any way. People like this guy need to chill.

But it’s not the middle ages, and this isn’t the childrens’ beer they had for a water substitute then. This is adults getting sloshed, and then vomiting green puke.

Not too healthy...

Getting sloshed yes. However, St. Arnold is the Patron Saint of Brewers. Arnold (Arnoul) of Soissons or Arnold or Arnulf of Oudenburg[1] (ca 1040 – 1087) is a saint of the Roman Catholic Church, the patron saint of hop-pickers and Belgian brewers.

Jesus’ first miracle was to turn water into wine.

Jesus’, and the apostles, all drank wine.

Now, the Holy Bible does admonish those who would drink to excess. However, too much of just about everything is bad for you. Too much literalism of the Bible makes one “readers of the Word, not doers”.

A funny story my Dad told me. Back in the late 40's St. Patrick's Day on the south side of Chicago. Him and his friends, all teenagers, were standing on the corner when the paddy wagon screeches to a halt in front of them. The two old turkeybird wagonmen jump out and one of them says, "ok lads, everyone line up and stick out your tongues." They looked down the line and one of the coppers tapped three of them on the chest with his nightstick saying, "you, you, and you into the paddywagon." They knew which ones were drinking beer because they were were the ones with the green tongues.

Happy St. Patrick's Day to all.

Yeah, but say you have two kinds of beer on hand - high-quality beer and low-quality beer. And you know that as popular as the green beer will be on the 17th, you'll have to dump it on the 18th - who'll want to drink it then?

So, which of the two kinds of beer do you add the dye to?
