It somehow seems against the spirit of the Bible to have a patron saint of getting sloshed.

Why would you assume getting sloshed is the necessary end result?

Beer was far safer to drink in the Middle Ages than water. Maybe it would help if you thought of St Paddy as the Patron Saint of healthy living.

Getting sloshed yes. However, St. Arnold is the Patron Saint of Brewers. Arnold (Arnoul) of Soissons or Arnold or Arnulf of Oudenburg[1] (ca 1040 – 1087) is a saint of the Roman Catholic Church, the patron saint of hop-pickers and Belgian brewers.

Jesus’ first miracle was to turn water into wine.

Jesus’, and the apostles, all drank wine.

Now, the Holy Bible does admonish those who would drink to excess. However, too much of just about everything is bad for you. Too much literalism of the Bible makes one “readers of the Word, not doers”.
