St. Patrick's Day surprise: Study finds relatives who share Obama's Irish ancestry; some kin unhappy

A new study claims that President Obama has 28 living relatives who share his Irish ancestry, but some of the newly discovered kin aren't eager to share a pint with him.

In the study, released to The Associated Press by family history website Ancestry.com, genealogists traced the descendants of about two dozen passengers who came to America from Ireland on the ship Marmion in March 1850.

And do you know *why* they saw so many Celtic "blonds"?

As a part of warfare ritual, the Celts used -lime- to stiffen their hair into "spikes" to appear more "fearsome" to their enemies.

A side effect of putting lime in your hair is that it -bleaches- it.

In actuality, the earliest known identification of what we now term "Celts" were from the steppes of Russia [formerly Rus] in the Caucasus mountains.

"Keltoi" is the name the Greeks gave them.

"The ethnonym Celts (Latin: Celtae; Ancient Greek: Keltoi, later also Keltai) seems to be based on a native Celtic tribal name (cf. Celtici in Portugal).

The name probably stems from the Indo-European root *kel- or *(s)kel-, but there are several such roots of various meanings: *kel- "to be prominent", *kel- "to drive or set in motion", *kel- "to strike or cut", etc.

The most common theory is that the word meant "hero" and is cognate with Old English hæleþ, Old Saxon helith, Old High German Helido (German Held) "hero" and Old Norse "free landowner, man".

The same element is present in a set of Hispano-Celtic - CELTIATUS, CELTIATIS (gen.), ARCELTI (gen.), CONCELTI (gen.), CELTIUS - and Gaulish - CELTUS, CELTILLA f, CELTA f, CELTILIUS - personal names".

Amber, FYI, simply floats ashore in Europe, most notably the Baltic sea.

The northern traders got rich off of selling amber in remarkably far-flung countries.

I can't imagine why the Greeks would go all that way to get it when it was readily available for trade just about everywhere.

"There is an older strain among the Celtic tribes that has the black/brown pigment,"

Uh, yeah...that would be the paleo-Celts I mentioned near Rus, above.

[again, see P-Celtic vs Q-Celtic language/round head Clets vs long head Celts]

You sure do "suspect" a lot of stuff.

Old saying:

“God gave the Irish whiskey so they wouldn’t rule the world. Then God gave the Irish the potato famine so that they would.”

“...this is the day where the idiots come out wearing green,...”

Ahh, it’s harmless enough. A little celebration of heritage. One third of this country has Irish roots.

At least they’re not running amok, looting stores, burning their towns down, because like, wow, a basketball team just won a championship...

I’ll take Saint Patrick’s Day celebrations over, ohh, say Kwanzaa, Cinco de Mayo, United Nations Day, or any other bullsh*t made-up lefty-lib holiday anytime.

Begorra, and Erin go BRA-less....:^)

A magnificent, tragic people, the Irish are...God bless them. They’ve had their share of pain.

Time to dig out my copy of “The Fighting 69th” and “The Irish in Us” with Jimmy Cagney and have a watch....

“The Quiet Man” is also one of my favorites. John Wayne and Victor McGlaglen beating the hell out of each other - it’s a hilarious, vulgar brawl!! Love it!

Everyone here should read *this*

Sure, we’ve had ‘pain’ but we haven’t made a religion/business of it or expected the government to hold our collective hands for centuries.

We get back up and we fight.
