(VANITY) Need some info on Cigars
me

Posted on 03/15/2011 7:21:05 AM PDT by SouthernBoyupNorth

I need some info on good cigars. Not where to buy them per say but some specific brands and why they are good. As I have never bought cigars before I really have no idea what to look for. I want to at least get the bossman a gift I know he will enjoy... so please help. I know this is leaving itself open for snarky comments but I would appreciate it if the forum wise guys could restrain themselves.

Thompson Cigars in Tampa....

There are better places...( Atlantic Cigar)...with better prices.

The dark Maduro wrappers make a very fine cigar.

True. The Arturo Fuente Classic Maduro is SPLENDID!!

“First find out whether a mild, medium or full bodied cigar is enjoyed, Macanudo is good for mild to medium, Punch has a nice full bodied Maduro wrapper cigar.”

Punch Robustos also come in an “EMS” which is short for English Market Selection. These are not as harsh, in my opinion as a Maduro and bolder than a lighter wrapper. They are always a good drawing cigar, well made and not too long a smoke. You don’t say what occasion, but they are good for almost all occasions. Strong enough for outdoors (and golf) and great with a variety of liquor and brandy. It’s a good midrange cigar, not showy.

Just an opinion from an old cigar smoker. If I didn’t know much about the smoker, I’d go for a five pack of these little babies, not too much money, but pretty hard to beat and consistent.

If you want to splurge and go for the big enchilada, ask your local cigar dealer if you can look in the humidor “in the back” and he’ll probably have some contraband. Ask him for an R&J Habana Churchill. If the boss doesn’t like that, quit and find a new job.

Go to your local shop and get a sampler box of Oliva series V’s. They should have a 5 pack of various sizes for about $35. If you want Cubans go to topcubans.com and get a sampler pack there. That’ll be around $80 or so. Can’t miss either way. He’ll love you. BTW- the V’s are better, but slightly less status. My humi is always loaded with V’s.

You can order from Thompson Cigar, either via the internet, catalog, or telephone.

http://www.thompsoncigar.com

They have sampler packs containing some the cigars folks here have kindly recommended.

My dad is in an assisted living facility: sampler packs are what I buy for him - from Thompson’s.

Another vote for La Gloria Cubana - if you can’t find any Cuban Montecristos.

Next to Cubans, the most overrated and disappointing cigar I’ve ever had.

Personally I enjoy Partagas 1845 Black Label but they’re not for everyone.

One that I’ve not seen suggested is Ashton. They are classy, and I’ve NEVER had a bad one. It is a safe buy, IMO.

However, Arturo Fuente, Punch, Padron, have many solid, safe options.

Onyx are good but strong for some.

I’d avoid Acid, Ghurka, or anything flavored unless you know that is what he likes.

Another option is a nice triple flame Colibri lighter or a personalized cutter...engraved with his initials.

Yea, I run into people that say the same thing about Opus X. I think it makes them feel like a real aficianado when they disparage what is really an exceptional cigar. Whatever...

My favorite all time smoke is a Cuban Monte Christo #2...is that over rated too? :-)oh and an Esplendido is over rated too I guess...

I run into pretentious people who toss out brands that they will impress other people instead of simply enjoying what they enjoy.

Heard Rush rave about the Opus X several years ago and when my local tobacconist got is annual allotment I bought two.

The first one was ok, nothing special, just ok. The second one was just as ok, too.

Disappointing. Like Cubans.

Many cigars for one to enjoy for half the price.

Maybe my pallet isn’t as refined as yours....maybe.

Just kinda disappointing that you can’t respect another’s tastes without tossing insults.

Whatever.

And your opinion of my recommendation of a good cigar to impress his boss with I could have lived without. It's a two way street.

I too look for the best value in purchasing cigars. As for impressing a boss with a gift... I think your route would be ill advised. My recommendation makes sense. My pallet has enjoyed every Opus X I've lit up.

If you buy into the hype then you will be disappointed.

To each their own.

But imo if one has very high expectations of Opus X or Cubans in general then one will likely be disappointed.

Then again, I enjoy cigars for my tastes and not in trying to impress anyone else.
