The Second Amendment and court precedent guarantee an individual's right to bear arms, but improved and expanded background checks are needed to prevent gun violence like the shocking attack in Tucson in January, President Obama wrote in an op-ed Sunday.
Writing in the Arizona Daily Star more than two months after the shooting of Rep. Gabrielle Giffords and 18 others, six of whom died, Obama said he's "willing to bet" that responsible gun owners would support laws to "keep an irresponsible, law-breaking few -- dangerous criminals and fugitives, for example -- from getting their hands on" guns.
"Most gun owners know that the word 'commonsense' isn't a code word for 'confiscation," he wrote.
"I'm willing to bet they don't think that using a gun and using common sense are incompatible ideas -- that we should check someone's criminal record before he can check out at a gun seller; that an unbalanced man shouldn't be able to buy a gun so easily; that there's room for us to have reasonable laws that uphold liberty, ensure citizen safety and are fully compatible with a robust Second Amendment," the president wrote.

A) "Commonsense" is one word?
B) No. "Guncontrol" is a code word for "confiscation".
We have a present system of background checks that the BATF simply ignored when it chose to, in the interest of accruing further power. We cannot trust the government in this matter - this isn’t paranoia, it’s a sober assessment of real-world performance.
Uhhhhhh....a question from the back of the room?......Aren't those laws already on the books?
Fix your own backyard first, you duffer.
Sure....Make “every gun registered” a law....Criminals will just line up to register their cache...and do a lot more importing.
The Brady Bunch probably penned it.
Canada is about as anti-gun as you can get, and even they are giving up on gun registration.
Besides they already know who buys guns in this country.
I bet Obama never fired a gun in his life.
I can picture him packing. I sure can't picture him duking it out as I think he's pure coward.
But a 45?? That would make him a big man in Chicago. He's a phoney...but that would work if he had 6 more dudes around for protection.
That's the only conclusion possible.
I do not support any more laws, we have enough..thank you very much.
What is needed is for law enforcement to actually use the laws on the books ....I’m lookin’ at you, BATF...
After following firearms legislation closely over the last 30 years, and learning the history of it before that, I can't come to any other conclusion than 'commonsense gun legislation' is definitely code for 'confiscation.'
"Uh, security, taze that man in the back and drag him out of the room."
Spot on, Texas Eagle. It is already against the law to sell firearms to the mentally incompetent. The only direction to go there is to promote more laws to have more people legally adjudicated mentally incompetent. I can hold my breath for a long time but I'm sure I'll pass out before 0bambi proposes that.
How can one "know" that which is not true? Many people think that, but most of them are useful idiots. Not too many gun owners among that group.
Better background checks would not have stopped the tucson shooter because he was LET GO by the police many times because “someone in his family” worked for the government, and “there would be more problems” if they arrested him
Mommy talked to officials in town to make them let poor baby go.
She is as guilty as him, along with any governmetn officials who helped her.
DEMAND AN INVESTIGATION~!!!!!!!!!!
Who let him off the hook and why??
Isn’t that rich? A guy who’s done everything to seal his background wants more background checks.
This is surreal.
Word up.
Ditto.
