TMZ ^ | 3/10/2011

Comedian Gallagher collapsed onto his back, clutching his chest during his performance tonight in Rochester, MN -- and TMZ has learned he was rushed to a hospital by ambulance.

Multiple witnesses tell TMZ Gallagher was doing his famous sledge-o-matic routine when he fell backwards onto the stage. We're told his eyes were closed and he was shaking.

Doctors -- who happened to be in the audience -- rushed on stage and straightened out Gallagher's arms ... and waited by his side until the ambulance arrived.

Story developing...

(AP) – 22 minutes ago

ROCHESTER, Minn. (AP) — Comedian Gallagher has been rushed to a hospital after collapsing during a performance in Minnesota.

Todd Powers, owner of Whiskey Bone’s Roadhouse in Rochester, said the 64-year-old Gallagher collapsed in the middle of a show Thursday night. Powers said it appeared the comedian may have had a stroke or a heart attack. It’s unclear what his condition is.

A witness, Chris Blade, told the Rochester Post-Bulletin that Gallagher had complained of pain in his left arm and shortness of breath earlier in the evening. Blade said Gallagher was responsive when emergency crews were taking him out of the club.

Gallagher, whose real name is Leo Anthony Gallagher, is best known for smashing watermelons with a sledgehammer.

It is a stupid routine and it is really old, but I really hope he is dong OK.

Prayers for the guy — I really hope he pulls through this.

Heart attacks are no fun. I know, I have been there...

Heard of him, unfamiliar with his work. Wish him well though.

If he spent more time eating watermelon instead of smashing them maybe......just say’in.

Otherwise, he has a very creative mind and parts of his routines are very patriotic.

I know he is a conservative and has made some nasty remarks about Obama. On another note, if you are over the age of 50 and have SOB with pain in your left arm it is time to get to the nearest hospital.

He probably was shocked that people are still paying money to see him perform.

Dang, saw him live back in the late 80’s, was a riot. Have sometimes wondered where he disappeared to.

I hope he pulls through it and lives to smash many more melons.

Good times on the Carson show

We saw him too in Denver, it had to have been in the 70's. We didn't know who he was and sat in one of the front rows (eyes rolling now). Praying he pulls through this.

Is this “THE” Gallagher or his lookalike brother who has the same act? No joke.

“Doctors — who happened to be in the audience — rushed on stage and straightened out Gallagher’s arms “

What a totally useless thing to do.
