Three environmental groups filed a federal lawsuit Monday accusing the Lower Colorado River Authority of violating the Clean Air Act for nearly a decade at its coal-fired power plant 90 miles west of Houston.
The groups allege that the Austin-based utility has made modifications to three generators at the 1,760-megawatt Fayette Power Project but failed to install modern pollution control equipment.
As a result, the power plant has released massive amounts of tiny particles, or soot, that can cause lung damage and premature death, the groups claim in the suit, which was filed at the U.S. District Court in Houston.
LCRA general manager Tom Mason said the utility will fight the lawsuit, which comes as it completes a $400 million project to reduce emissions of sulfur dioxide, mercury and fine particulate matter at the power plant near La Grange.
"This is a power plant that has been praised by regulators and environmental groups alike," Mason said in a statement. "It is a model of how a coal plant can be operated responsibly."

Amen. I'd love to see utility companies do this as well. They can tell these groups they do not want their money nor do they wish to offer them service. Let them make their own power or work by candlelight.
Yeah, that sucker is just belching all manner of filth into the air.
I like the cattle pens and loading chute in the lower right.
I dunno. Judging by the pic provided it looks like scrubber technology has been implemented.
Oh wait. My screen was dusty.
Nevermind.
Carry on.
Shut it down and see how many “premature deaths” are caused by a lack of AC in Houston this summer.
Evil, EEEVVVVIIILLLL..................
And how are they going to charge their smartphones and electric cars?
Yeah, it’s a filth pit of a coal plant.
The fact that it looks like a pristine park is due to photoshop no doubt.
The envirowackos are never satisfied. They keep piling on the requirements in an attempt to shut down industry. They have no idea how miserable their own little self-absorbed lives will be if they succeed.
Notice the devices on the stacks. Before the stack devices smoke poured from them. Now it looks like that everyday.
Amen to that one!!!
LOL...oh why didn’t I think of that one. Excellent point.
Yup, that'll shut 'em up. I remember fishing at that lake years ago. Lots of big bass, but never caught a keeper because of the slot rule.
