Phil Collins Retires For Good From Music, Cites Injuries and Hearing Loss

PHIL Collins has quit music for good after developing hearing problems, a dislocated vertebra and nerve damage in his hands from his 40-year career playing drums.

The Easy Lover hitmaker also thinks people are sick of him and his music.

“It’s a good time to stop,” said the star, who has sold more than 150 million records.

“I look at the MTV Music Awards and I think: ‘I can’t be in the same business as this’.

“I don’t really belong to that world and I don’t think anyone’s going to miss me. I’m much happier just to write myself out of the script entirely.

“I’m not worried about not being able to play the drums again, I’m more worried about being able to cut a loaf of bread safely or building things for my kids.”

Collins — who is in a relationship with newsreader Dana Tyler and has been married three times, to Andrea Bertorelli, Jill Taverman and Orianne Cevey — recently insisted he has no plans to ever tie the knot again.

“She’s a very sweet girl, sweet lady but I’m not going to get married again,” he said. “I think I’m better off on my own.”

That’s a good thing. The Bible says we are to be in the world but not of it.

Kinda surprised at this, didn’t know he’d been having issues with the sticks.

Bless ya, Phil. Emjoy your family as you’re meant to.

Genesis, Phil Collins Peter Gabriel ?

I lean to this.

For a guy who everyone is sick of his music, a whole lot of bands are covering his hits lately.

I still prefer Peter Gabriel.

Games Without Frontiers

In Your Eyes

Gabriel reminds me of Steve Windwood.

"Ripples" is such a great song. "Mad Man Moon" as well. Just listening to Trick of the Tail in the car today.

I was just watching a show on Palladia, Genesis’s When In Rome concert of 2007. It was marvelous.

The original Foxtrot version was, IMO, untoppable.

I have to agree that Phil's version was better. Pete was really straining to hit those high notes at the end. But also, the band, especially Tony's keyboards were light years ahead on Seconds Out, than in the early days.

He decided not to keep pace with Rush’s marriages.

A Trick of the Tail is just a perfect album, it pretty much blew away any fears that Genesis wouldn’t be able to carry on without Gabriel, there isn’t a weak song on that album.

I am still partial to the Lamb Lies Down on Broadway, but I always felt, it was the perfect time for Gabriel to leave Genesis, because there was no way he could have ever topped that.

I always liked Phil Collins and I hate hearing about his health problems and not being able to play the drums anymore.

Hackett’s crying guitar in the “Aching Men’s Feet” section is much more powerful on the “Second’s Out” version. I can never listen to it without rewinding it five or six times. It’s a 25 minute song, but whenever I listen to it, I need 60-90 minutes to myself to experience it properly.

I agree with you about Gabriel straining a bit on the original. But I give him all the credit in the world for writing a rock masterpiece.

Also agree about “Lamb”. No straining there at all. Gabriel hits every note out of the park. “The Chamber of 32 Doors” and “In the Rapids/It” are both near the top on my list of all-time favorite songs.

Oh, I do to. I have all his concert DVD’s. I did not like Collins’ solo work. It was too pop. But I loved his drum work with Genesis and he did a darned good job on vocals. Gabriel was better to me though. I also own a couple of Genesis documentaries, btw.

What ticks me off is that Genesis sold all their live concert stuff (everything from guitars to amps to raw speakers) on Ebay a few years ago at a time I was cash strapped. I’m a bass player and would have LOVED to get my hands on the genuine stuff. Oh well...

Regardind “In Your Eyes”, I’m not into the world music thing, but I like what Gabriel did with it. Have you ever seen him do Don’t Give Up with Kate Bush?

But this thread is about Collins. :)

Speaking of Winwood. Have you ever heard of Stomu Yamashta and “Go”. The vocals are done by Winwood, but I agree that Gabriel would be really interesting singing those lyrics.
