Rich Americans flock to fast food

When it comes to cutting back, the rich are learning a little secret the rest of us have always known: fast-food is cheap and good (if not good for you).

Quick service restaurants, such as McDonald's and Subway, saw a bigger rise in spending by ultra-affluent consumers than any other restaurant type last year, according to the most recent data by American Express Business Insights.

Lori and Santiago Riviere are among those that have recently been turned on to fast-food dining.

They call themselves "dinks" -- as in dual income no kids. She's an attorney, he works in finance and together they make "well over six figures." Still, she says the recession has changed her mindset about spending.

"I think it's a sacrifice, but when you have to choose between that and a pair of Jimmy Choos, I'm going to choose the Jimmy Choos." (snip)

I guess my mind works the opposite. There's a mall near me that has a Subway and a mom-and-pop sandwich shop.

I can get a twelve inch substandard sub at Subway for $5 or an authentic Italian grinder that is a thing of beauty for $10.

Screw subway. I'll buy some $20 Reeboks at Sports Authority instead of Jimmy Choos.

For the same price one would pay at McDonalds for a Big Mac, a shake and a large fries, I could EASILY eat for an entire week.

Maybe if you ate only cooked dried beans, rice or plain macaroni with no sauce. You sure can't buy a week's fresh salad vegetables for that money, much less a week's balanced meals.

It is. Especially their new Rasberry Cheesecake cookies.

Now, driving by a McD, the smell is almost enough to make all of us sick.

Sure it is. We all know you can smell McDonald's food out in street in a passing car. And those french fries they sell, stink to high heaven no matter where you are. Such a foul odor.

Invest in the medical industry now. The rich will have plenty of money to spend fixing the damage caused by eating too much fast food.

Feeding my family of 7 on homemade chicken and dumplings tonight

I'll be right over. :-)

Mrs WBill has an easy crock-pot based recipe. She doesn't make it nearly enough, IMHO.

Cheap processed food with very little nutrional value (I don’t care what they say). Meat don’t taste like meat. Bread (buns) don’t taste like bread, cheese, EVERYTHING else too looks great, tastes like cardboard.....NEVER eat there. I’ll give them this. The mustard and ketchup, pickles are probably real - onions-dehydrated, chopped, probably old as dirt.

Dollar menu rules. When I’m in a hurry, I can pick up 3 double cheesburgers to get me through the day, for about 4 bucks. No fries. No shake. Side orders are for wimps!

I don’t consider the QP ir Big Mac a treat as much as an acceptable alternative in a time crunched day.

There definitely better burgers out there, I may not have the time to pursue them. And no Burger King, and Wendy’s are not on the list.

Exactly. This is a load of crap. An Egg McMuffin meal is $5.00. A #2 container of generic whole oats is $1.19. Those oats will feed my family breakfast for a week, and I can also use the oats as ingredients in other dishes.

Plus fast food restaurants buy from Beef Products, Inc., who add wholesome ingredients like ammonia to their beef.

$800 may be Jimmy Choo shoes to some, but it’s an acre of land to others. I’ll bet the land lasts longer.

Nobody knows how to cook anymore?

You'd be surprised to find out how many people don't know the basics of cooking themselves a healthy meal.

Sort of like the gal at the swimming pool in that Amazon Kindle ad: “I spent more on these sunglasses.”

Whooptiedooo!

You got ripped off.

You can eat for a week on $8? Really?

Perhaps he meant "graze"...?

Don’t understand why fast food is so “bad.”

It's not, in moderation. The only thing I ever get at McDonald's is a fish sandwich; too much goop on the burgers. Wendy's or Checkers for a cheeseburger; KFC or Popeye's for chicken; Arby's or Subway when available. Plenty of options. Perfectly fine, once or twice a week.

White Castle does their own beef processing.
They have a plant near where I live in Indiana.

You can even learn how to make meals that take about 30 minutes to prepare.

I realized that when I lived in Ft. Worth area. It would take longer to get through the drive-thru at most fast food places than it would to cook the meal at home.
