If you've got to carry that particular gun, then with 9 shots you might want to carry a mix like - CCI 22 Long Rifle and 22LR Shot Shell 31 Grain #12 Shot

The little blue cones on the nose are full of $12 shot and can turn your pistol into a mini shotgun for some close range pain.

That being said, with that particular caliber you are counting on good fortune for true self defense. Unless you can place shots into some soft tissue or otherwise contact vulnerable organs, you are going to have hard time stopping an attacker. Injure? Yes. Wound? No doubt. Stop? Maybe.

Love the idea of a .50 revolver, but I don’t know if I have the wrist strength.

The whole thing is a photoshop. There was however, a fellow who built a single shot 600 nitro handgun. The video is all over the net. BTW, he only shot it once.

Stay away from Remington bulk .22 ammo of any kind. Total crap. At least every 20th round is a dud. Maybe every 10th round, even.

Agree. Those Yellow Jackets are effective. The truncated cone seems to work well. Marmots hate them!

.22 is not the first choice by most for self defense.

That said, ammo is cheap, recoil is light and you have 9 rounds in that revolver. Many will be intimidated by the gun without knowing what the caliber is.

I would suggest Aguila SSS subsonic 60gr solids.
The noise is not the issue, because you will still hear them just fine. The powder in a .22 cannot make that heavy a projectile go fast.

Transfer of energy to the assailant is the goal and more energy is present in a heavy slow projectile than a light fast one.

Weight makes momentum which translates directly into energy and penetration.

Finally practice, practice, practice.

This will do at least two things for you; it will prove the rounds work in your gun and it will help you to use the gun if you are scared out of your mind (which you likely will be if you have to shoot for your life).

CCI Stinger .22 LR Penta-Point Hollow Point 1640 fps.

The hardest hitting .22 LR.

All of the wise-acres on this thread seem to have forgotten (or are unaware of) Jeff Cooper’s advice. Paraphrased by me as “if you can’t shoot a .45 well, get a .22 and learn to put four rounds in each eye socket”.

With the right shot placement, a .22LR will drop the biggest mook like a rock.

As to ammo, get the hottest round you can find. I like the Remington “Yellowjacket” round, previously recommended on this thread.

Yes. Use CCI Stingers. (Most potent .22LR hollow points on the market.)

Well, they are the fastest. Light bullet. Not real accurate in my experience. I'd choose something else.

I have a S&W 38 airweight for CCW.

But for my wife at home, it’s a Ruger 22 revolver loaded with magnum hollow points. Easy to shoot, little recoil, very accurate, and in close quarters those magnum HP will spread out pretty well.

Better the 22 mag in the body, than the 38 in the wall or ceiling.

Not really. It will not be of much help as a self-defense weapon with or without ammo.

Case in point:

Gold tooth blocks bullet

Not bad, but I'd rather have this baby:

And believe it or not, that's *not* a photoshop, but a real pistol (chambered in .600 Nitro Express - Yikes!)

Especially with a deformed hollow point bouncing around inside me.

A .22 was the hands down favorite of Mafia hit-men for years. One round in the tracheae (so he can't talk) and the rest in the ear or eye. The little pellets just bounce around inside a skull and really tear up the innards. You definitely need to be up close and personal for it to be effective. At ten feet people have survived a head shot with a superficial scalp wound.

Kel-Tec makes an autoloader (PMR) chambered for the .22WMR which is a much better choice ballisticly, plus the magazine carries 30 rounds. The price looks righteous at just under $300.

Regards,
GtG

I knew I’d pick up a nice new bookmark for the firearms folder if I stuck with this thread long enough. :-)
