“Sensibly suggested huh? Your browser must have filtered out the comments about the bananas.”

The concept of humor illudes you. That was called a joke and it wasn’t directed at the poster.

One final (really, I mean it) note - a .22 LR is a DEADLY round, which will STOP a human being. This is why a .22 is sold at the gun counter and not the toy department.”

“Dangerous? You caught me - one of the most popular (and often used) self defense weapons is useless.”

I only consider your advice useless and dangerous, not the 22LR. The 22 is dangerous but a poor choice for self defense if other cartridges are available.

I dont know why you keep arguing the point that virtually EVERYONE AGREES WITH. What you dont seem to understand is that the purpose of a defense gun is to stop an attack NOW, not to kill the attacker 2 hours from now. Since you are probably smart enough to understand that, I figure that you are just arguing the point out of stubborness.

I don’t think anybody will argue with 1 or 2...but I knew there would be a crowd of Billy Bad-Arses who would tell this guy he was a pansy for using a .22. I don’t typically carry, and my pistol is an M9...so I’m not defending my own personal choice here...but really, this guy will be just fine with a .22. Trust me, its lethal - no matter what some guy’s dentist’s brother in law saw happen on an episode of CHIPs once. Some of the responses here are just absolutely silly...I’m all for somebody having a pocket cannon of his chosing, but why on earth should we make fun of a guy for carrying a smaller caliber. Its his choice. I’m sure he’s fired the thing; and, I’m sure he’s come to the (correct) conclusion that it would kill somebody.

A .22 does NOT have the real world stopping power necessary for a self defense firearm. Yes, it can be lethal. Yes, it can hurt to be shot with a .22. But try stopping an assailant who is dosed up with PCP wearing a heavy leather jacket. I have seen demonstrations where .22s failed to penetrate heavy leather coats!

The foot pounds being carried by the projectile simply does not carry enough energy to transfer to the assailant to stop him reliably. The real world statistics show that a .22 has a less than one in twenty chance of stopping an attacker with one shot in a fight situation. Are YOU willing to trust your and your loved one's lives to that low a probability? I certainly am not. It borders on insanity to advise others to fo so. . . Unless you are planning to be the assailant.

If you want something for self protection, get a gun that has penetration, stops IN the miscreant and delivers every foot pound of energy it carries to him! I carried a .45 ACP. a .40 or larger caliber is best. Stay away from the higher velocity magnum rounds. They tend to pass through the intended target and can hit innocent by-standers beyond the badguy because they don't stop! This is particularly true inside houses. Misses with high velocity rounds can pass through several walls and hit your kids.

I managed The Old Sacrameto Armoury (retail arm of Pacific International, the largest Colt wholesaler on the West coast) and Simms Hardware's Gun Department (named #1 Gun Dealer in the US in 1971) in the early 1970's. I was qualified to testify in the California Courts as an expert on the values, types, calibers, etc., of firearms, so I know somewhat about what I am talking about even though I've been out of that industry for 35 years.
