You'll Never Guess Who Has More Hot 100 Singles Than Elvis And Michael Jackson (Guess w/o peeking)

The musical act that has scored the most songs on the Billboard Hot 100 is not Elvis, Michael Jackson, or The Beatles.

It's the cast of Glee, reports the AP, which is an amazing achievement considering the act first appeared on the charts only 18 months ago.

In that time, Glee has achieved the record of having more songs on the 52-year old Billboard chart in history -- a total of 113 hit songs.

Glee debuted six new songs on the chart this week alone, pulling five songs ahead of Elvis Presley, who had 108 hit songs.

The Hot 100 doesn’t mean what it used to, due to the fragmentation of the record industry. You can make the top 20 in classical by selling a few HUNDRED copies.

You may as well say some current station is the #1 rated rock ‘n’ roll AM station of all time, because it leads its competitors by so much.

When I was a kid, besides pop/country and soul, there was classical and “oldies” formats. Now, there are oldies for EACH of the genres (except classical), and the category is subdivided into WWII era, non-rock 50’s and 60’s (Patti Page, Frank Sinatra), pre-Beatles Rock, Beatles-era pop, classic album rock (late 60’s to early ‘70s) and 80’s oldies, plus various flavors of adult contemporaries in addition to the modern rap, hip-hop genres. Some of these sub-genres outsell 90% of what is new.

In an era when the buyable single doesn’t really exist, the ratings system will be skewed.

I am not a huge Beatles fan, but one week early in their run, they had all five of the top five. Now THAT is an impressive record. Its right up there with Tris Speaker’s seven unassisted double plays by a center fielder, the product of an era that can never return.

Well, the gay character (Kurt) is looked upon as some sort of hero in that show...

AS the show develops, I expect such issues as “gay love” and eventually “gay marriage” coming up as an episode... perhaps more than one episode.

I watched the Grammy’s Sunday Night. Now I know why the music industry is in trouble.

and I have to admit they're pretty good.

If I were using auto-tune, I'd be that good, too.

I say BS on this. That stuff is Crap.
I may be getting old but I will swear that 60’s and 70’s music was the best.
Had lyrics and a melody you could remember and sing.
By the way since that is some collective ensemble crap on TV I say that doesn't count, exception “The Monkees”.

I’d say that they were as good as they sounded on TV LIVE ( no lip-synching too ).

The Valentines episode had them showing how to use condoms. In other words they were telling millions of kids in this country that if they aren’t having sex they are lame.

RE: I may be getting old but I will swear that 60’s and 70’s music was the best.

Pop music is evolving to a point where you don’t get a lot of good melody at all... now, it’s mostly rhythm, beat and most of all — the ability to talk fast while following the beat.

Also, a lot of so called musicians can’t really sing. Their main “talent” ( for want of a better word ) is to look sexy, be very good dancers who can shake their booty, and lip synch to perfection while performing live with lights, smoke and technical effects doing the rest.

There used to be a time when lip-synchers were shamed and their awards revoked (remember Milli Vannili ?). Now, it seems that lip synching is standard and acceptable.

If they sing out of tune ( as Randy Jackson would say, sound pitchy ), technology can auto-tune the imperfection.

Not sure how long this genre of music is going to last until the next generation gets bored with it.

Having said that ... the music of GLEE isn’t like that at all. They really do a lot of re-versioning of the music of the 60’s and 70’s.

When the GLEE folks sing live, they REALLY sing (no lip-synching).

For instance, I haven’t heard Lulu’s TO SIR WITH LOVE for ages. Yet, they sang it, pretty well I might add. Listen to their version here:

I only clicked on this thread to see who could possibly have more hits the three mentioned!

I too have never heard of them/it!

But then, I don't watch TV so being clueless is nothing new!

From most of the comments, I prefer to stay clueless in regards to this! :)

The thing to remember is that music is much much more diverse than it was back in the 1960s and 70s. And while mass-market radio and TV serve a certain slice of "what's hot this second," there are other people making music much more to whatever taste you have, and bringing it to their audience through alternative means than Top 40 radio play.
