Borders Group Inc. filed for Chapter 11 protection Wednesday and said it will close about 30% (about 200) of its stores nationwide in the coming weeks.

E-books aren’t that big, and for Border’s troubles don’t even rate. This company has been on the death list for 5 or 6 years, they mismanaged themselves and misread market changes a long time ago and haven’t been able to correct.
Hope & Change.
Bah. We don’t have a big enough town to rate Borders or Barnes and Noble, but in the closest big city they have closed all of the B&N’s except one, (and it is NOT easy to get to), and now they are closing the only Borders : / Being a reading family, we ALWAYS would stop, everyone would find at least one new book, and 2 cups of coffee for the ride home : |
Great recovery we are having...
May God give us strength.

Looks to me like most of those closing are in areas infested by liberals.Perhaps. I suspect it has less to do with political affiliation than it does to just having too many stores in urban areas (which tend to be less conservative).
In Chicago and Orlando (the two cities in which I've lived in recent years), they had an excess of stores. Here in Orlando, I had four Borders to choose from without going beyond my normal driving range. Now, I'll have two.
My Kindle can be read for about two weeks without a charge.
I like the old-style books, which no one controls for me or knows about.
I had a relative who didn't like making the change from stone tablets to scrolls, but eventually he made the crossover, understanding the utility and ease of the newer technology.
It’s a shame that more people will be out of work, but I buy books from Amazon.com. No tax, no shipping charges...
How do you read e-books when the power is off?I can read several books (over a period of days or weeks) without recharging my Kindle. If my power is out that long, I have bigger problems than not being able to read my escapist literature! :-)
Of course, anyone who has their survivalist library in an ebook should rethink their strategy!
Crap. They’re closing mine.
I find myself going to Borders and Barnes & Noble just to window shop and then download the book I want from Amazon to my Kindle. If I’m reading a classic, .99 cents or Free is certainly a no brainer.
LOL! That was great!
Same here....like losing a good friend.
And I just bought a perfered membership....Can I get a refund?
I was thinking more about a TEOTWAWKI scenario. Kindles ain’t gonna work then. Anyway, I just like to smell my books.
We’re not on it. Yeah!
This is NOT what we meant when we said we wanted to close the Borders.....
There are some positive things to the ebooks and the hardware. But "loaning" a book to a friend or reselling and/or trading in the used market has yet to be defined and is important to me. I also don't think that the current prices reflect the greatly reduced cost of production and distribution.
Reading a book on a device is sometimes impossible (power) or more difficult (beach). Most of all, you can drop a book and it will survive!
If you survive TEOTEWANKI I doubt you will be in the same place you are right now with your library intact. By then you will be able stroll through the radioactive libraries and pull books off the shelves at will, unless folks need to burn them to keep warm or relish the pages for defication clean up.
I’m hoping TEOTWAWKI will hold off for another year. Next year I’m moving out to the deep country with my library, my guns, a horse or two, and some chickens. It will take them—whoever they are—awhile to find me. Meanwhile, I’ll read. ;-) Yes, I’m a farm girl, and I can manage.
Crap. My store is on the closing list. More’s the pity had I ever gone there for more than Latte and to get laid.
Your best bet is a rural area where you are tight with the locals and can produce something of value. A person in a tribe is more secure than a lone human trying to survive on her own.
My understanding is Kindle will allow a temporary transfer of a book, say several weeks, for lending. Reselling is another whole subject....
