A 5-year-old named Hickory pulled a huge surprise Tuesday night at the Westminster Kennel Club, winning best in show and the title of America's top dog. She became the first of her breed to capture the purple-and-gold ribbon and shiny silver bowl.

LOL. My dad and mom used to show a Dalmatian.
After his very fist show (he won) he got his very first stud job.
My dad said he seemed to correlate the two events in his little doggy mind and he was all “spit and polish”, “styling and profiling”, strutting his stuff at the dog show after that!
And, I would dare say, a heck of a lot more intelligent.
What a beautiful animal. And I agree, looking at the other best of group winners, fearing it would be the “obama” dog...shakes head. Wish I had a nickel for every time the commentator mentioned o and/or the White House : /
Run Hickory, RUN!!
Tatt
Absolutely gorgeous!
"hmmmmm, elitist bonedigger"
“Hickory is way more attractive than Maddow”
“And, I would dare say, a heck of a lot more intelligent.”

My Black Mouth Cur is prettier than Maddow was even before she went butch and smarter than her and that Scottish Deer Tick put together.
It’s (0) everywhere like slime on sh**.
LOL!! Are you serious? Kinda worried look, but still laughing, with a mental image of some crazy lib, desperately running, out of breath, tripping, falling and realizing that this might not be such a good idea after all ; P
I’m sure he knows he done good.
“less about being canine beauty contests”
People who say that don’t understand beauty. The reason the dog is beautiful is because the dog is bio-mechanically exceptional. In this case, the dog has both outstanding basic structure and outstanding breed characteristics. Form always follows function, that’s why the dog is shaped like it is.
Can it still handle a deer? I’d say yes it certainly has the form to do so. Does it have the killer instinct? That’s a question we may not know. Many sighthound people do lure coursing so I think that’s how they keep that characteristic in their dogs.
Dogs know when they win. The best show dogs love being singled out and admired. It’s called “attitude”. It’s really fun to have one of those on the end of your leash.
There are plenty of examples of dogs being bred for a specific appearance that are ill suited to perform the function for which they are bred.
There are plenty of examples of dogs whose modern shape or stance has adversarial effects to the dog’s health or its ability to perform the function for which it was created—take the pug, which cannot breathe well, or the German Shepherd’s slanted back.
“When the German shepherd dog first came to be, it was a medium size dog with a somewhat longer and coarser coat and small erect ears. It had a straight back, sturdy build and was a working herding dog. Its gait consisted of a walk which covered a lot of ground quickly, and its trot was similar to a run, only with a more graceful appearance.
Through the years, German shepherd breeders have entered different bloodlines into the German shepherd, which has takes away many of their original traits - most importantly their straight back. The American line German shepherd is bred with more angulations through the body resulting in the sloping back you see in many of today’s German shepherds. They are now being bred more for show than for their original working ability. The American Kennel Club has adjusted their requirements for what makes the “perfect German shepherd” based on these changes.”

never heard of that and I’m from there
Interesting; the bull mastiff certainly is a good example of what happens when form is considered to be of more importance than function.
I used to show dogs and my other Belgian Terv won a lot.
He lost out going to Westminister by his half brother but in all that time I can honestly say I don’t think dogs know they’ve won.
The whole show is not honest, it comes down to do you know the judge, do you have a rep in that community, who is running against you not the dog but the owner, who is showing the dog?
I still go to the Ocala dog show every year to see old friends but there is one time I went and an homosexual flaming girlie judge gave the win to a guy showing some mutt.
Why?
Because the guy showing the dog was also a openly flaming homosexual who was strutting his stuff up and down.
I did not have a dog in the ring when this happened but not one person thought much of the winning dog so like I said it all comes down to other issues and personal thought.
There is a ton of things which happened behind the scenes and yes politics play a part too.
