The death of the station wagon

The news came like a blow to the gut for this child of 1950s suburbia:

Volvo, the company most associated with station wagons for the last 20 years, will stop selling wagons in the U.S. The market is drying up.

The Volvo wagon had been on life support for months. After dropping the larger V70 Volvo in 2010, Doug Speck, CEO of Volvo Cars of North America, told Automotive News he was giving the V50 another year because there "is a bit more energy in the small wagon segment."

Not enough, apparently. Volvo, which was sold to China's Geely in 2010, sold just 480 V50s last year, about two per dealer.

Enlightenment the Volvo has always been considered the car of the liberal and the older generation is dying out now.

I remember their hay day was in the 60’s they must have sleep in them more than had families? LOL

Is Volvo a liberal car?
A friend claimed that Volvo is a liberal car, as indicated by the bumper stickers that most of them have (John Jerry, Greenpeace, etc). Looking around, I think he is right-most of the Volvos I see do have liberal bumper stickers. Any thoughts on whether this is a coincidence or is there a specific reason.

My first car was a 64 ford station wagon, with a 429 police interceptor in it!

It came from the factory with that in it and nobody can explain how that engine got in a sta-wgn.

It had an automatic transmission with crappy gears, but it had no top end that I could find. At about 130 mph it would start to float around so bad that it would scare you to death, but it still had petal left.

You all remember the rear facing rear seat in the late 60’s and early 70’s station wagons?

Oh yeah, I remember the "way-back seat" well. It was a compromise between being out of arm's length of your parents and being carsick. It was worth it :-)
