Much like the music world itself, the Grammy Awards is a colorful train wreck of a television show.
Inexplicable results and mesmerizing performances mixed with the mundane added up to a generally unsatisfying evening for CBS Sunday. Unless, of course, you're Lady Antebellum.
The Grammys are barely an awards show anymore. As the music business has splintered and sputtered in recent years, the Grammys have become a performance show, advertising musicians who need the attention. Show producers don't even bother with a host anymore. For the first hour of Sunday's show, only one trophy was given out for a live version of a Train song done better in the studio.
In theory, it's a great idea. If you're unfamiliar with an artist's work, it's much better to watch him or her in action than to listen to speeches thanking managers, producers and hairstylists. Or, in Train's case, Howard Stern.
In practice, the show's success or failure is tied to whether the artists can bring the goods.
Whether they took trophies home with them or not, the night's winners included Janelle Monae, Eminem, Cee Lo and Rihanna. Among the losers were Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Rihanna.
Yes, you read that last part right. Rihanna was spellbinding for her part in Eminem's ominous "Love the Way You Lie." When she returned later to perform "What's My Name" with Drake, she curiously dropped her hand-held microphone to her waist a few times while the vocals continued on.

Well who is paying who on this one?
Did the Black Eyed Peas have to pay a lot to get to play at the Super Bowl?
Yeah, I can imagine that the record company would pay a lot for that, is that what you’re saying?
And if there was a contest, the Super Bowl Committee would be
giving away for free a slot that could be sold for millions.
I have to assume that Black Eyed Peas paid the Super Bowl.
I dont see why it begs the question, but Chinese and Japanese.
Thanks, an inquiring mind wanted to know.
Our country is going down the tubes. Who has time to watch these freaks?
Bookmarked to listen to later today. Also got to remember that country music has branches in it just like a big tree that has been around for many, many years. Every summer, I go to a yearly blue grass festival, the Podunk Bluegrass Music Festival which takes place each early August. It is in my hometown of East Hartford, CT.Great performing acts. I call bluegrass the original country. When I listen to my iTunes, I often listen to not only 108 FM in Pittsburgh, but also a number of good bluegrass online music stations online via iTunes.
Every day in every way.
Remember 2012 is coming, hang in there.
Like that offers much hope.
Country and western has a lot of branches in its family tree. That is why I often say country/bluegrass/americana.
It does because we can throw the bums out!
We can. But so far even conservatives aren’t showing that they are willing to face up to the realities of who the real bums even are.
Did anyone else notice the “Don’t Tread On Me” Flag lighted in Red, hanging up high to the left of the stage?
I pretty much listen to Pandora and Youtube anymore for my music. There’s a whole lot of talent out there you’re never going to hear on the radio, especially for a punk/new wave/indie fan like me.
Well you have to remember it is early still, and things are going to be quiet right now, because this is an off-year. Give it time.
The TV contracts for the NFL have the Super Bowl rotating between the three networks (not including ESPN or NFL Network) that carry the games.
Just went to YouTube to look the group, Arcade Fire up, came upon a video which presents the song, “The Suburbs”. It sounded better on YouTube. Must have been the tv presentation last night that distorted it.
if you’re including bluegrass and americana and defining it that way, yes, there’s definitely a lot of indie right now that would appeal.
LCD Soundsystem just sold out Madison Square Garden in Seconds. Happened a couple days ago. No actual people apparently got tickets. Scalpers with computer programs. They’re selling on Stubhub right now for $120. $120 x $20,000 - $3 Million. Good deal. Way to go LCD Soundsystem. Not so good deal that none of their fans were able to get tickets at face value.

oh yeah, it’s easy to find great new music.
LCD Soundsystem sold out Madison Square Garden in seconds. Amazing.
That’s another band that “no one ever heard of”. But it didn’t surprise me that it was the hottest ticket of the moment. Final Show. Hometown NYC. Indie band with a long career. James Murphy apparently was limited in some of his career options being in LCD Soundsystem, he’s scoring a Coppola movie or a Scorsese movie I think, working with other acts he was unable to work with.
AF was horrible
You do understand I meant the term as from her perspective. I do agree with you in this regard.
People who think "good" music is played on the radio have never heard of them...
