Much like the music world itself, the Grammy Awards is a colorful train wreck of a television show.
Inexplicable results and mesmerizing performances mixed with the mundane added up to a generally unsatisfying evening for CBS Sunday. Unless, of course, you're Lady Antebellum.
The Grammys are barely an awards show anymore. As the music business has splintered and sputtered in recent years, the Grammys have become a performance show, advertising musicians who need the attention. Show producers don't even bother with a host anymore. For the first hour of Sunday's show, only one trophy was given out — for a live version of a Train song done better in the studio.
In theory, it's a great idea. If you're unfamiliar with an artist's work, it's much better to watch him or her in action than to listen to speeches thanking managers, producers and hairstylists. Or, in Train's case, Howard Stern.
In practice, the show's success or failure is tied to whether the artists can bring the goods.
Whether they took trophies home with them or not, the night's winners included Janelle Monae, Eminem, Cee Lo and Rihanna. Among the losers were Christina Aguilera, Lady Gaga, Justin Bieber and Rihanna.
Yes, you read that last part right. Rihanna was spellbinding for her part in Eminem's ominous "Love the Way You Lie." When she returned later to perform "What's My Name" with Drake, she curiously dropped her hand-held microphone to her waist a few times while the vocals continued on.

From ‘91 to ‘95 (I dropped out to get married, LOL)...one of my favorite CDs to this day is the debut album by Garbage. My musical tastes were (and still are) all over the place. I had a huge crush on The Edge from U2 when I was in college as well as Scott Weiland from Stone Temple Pilots. I like throwing some Johnny Cash in the CD player when it’s a sunny day. I just bought the latest One Republic CD last week :) (My kids are getting sick of ‘All the Right Moves’ but they love jamming to ‘Everybody Loves Me’ LOL)
My tastes, like I said, vary wildly, and while I’m not a music afficianado or an expert on it in any way, shape or form (the music gene hit both my brothers and eluded me, haha), I like what I like and what I’m playing in the car on the CD player at home reflects my mood most of the time.
This is the hugeness. U2 is the headliner though. But Muse is a global band basically, and we don’t really have too many of those. The bands from the US that do well in Europe aren’t necessarily those that are on the radio in the US.
While they are good opening for U2 (saw them on the 360 tour in October 2009) they are a better headliner as it's their full show which is a spectacle to behold. I saw them in February 2010. The Silver Sun Pickup opened for them. Another great indie band. If you like the Smashing Pumpkins you'll like Silver Sun Pickups.
The first song they did I think took out my eye! Just awful.
Did you notice they did mention Ronny James Dio’s death?
Yeah, the Muse headliner show is going to be the better of the Muse shows.
I didn’t watch the show.
And apparently, on CBS! I haven't watched this thing since the '70s, but here in my computer room I glanced at the clock last night around 11:55 and figured I'd catch the last 5 minutes of it. Went out to the TV and searched up the dial for the show on 'E!', BET, MTV, A&E, TNT, VH1, the Oprah Winfrey Network, The Food Channel, etc. and never found it. It was only later I found out that the broadcast had aired on one of the dinosaur networks.
I’ve hated Dylan haters ever since one of them called him “Judas” at Newport (was that you?), and Zimmy replied: “I don’t believe you!”
A few years back, at the Rentcheler Football Field, which mostly hosts University of Connecticut football during the fall months, with CT Whale Hockey Fest going on right now for two weeks, this being week 2, a few years back the Rolling Stones came to do a concert late August of 2006 or 2007.
Wow! Dylan at the Newport Jazz Festival! You go back as far as I do.
Only.... who is Zimmy, and why did someone call Dylan “Judas”?

Zimmy’s Robert Zimmerman, who, before becoming Bob Dylan, played keyboards in Bobby Vee’s band in Minnesota (?)
In Newport 1965 at the stately Newport Folk Festival, accoustic folk music hero Dylan went electric, earning himself the “Judas” insult which he smartly turned around.
Last summer, while attending the Podunk Bluegrass Festival in my hometown, I got to see THIS LEGEND, who not only does A LOT of country/bluegrass, but CAN ROCK with the best of them, his name is Ricky Skaggs and as the last act for last summer’s Podunk Bluegrass Festival, as the headliner, he is still GREAT after all these years.

Most likely the only radio stations, other then for digtal radio programs such as iTunes that would do what are call “indie” rock are most likely college radio stations.
My tastes are widespread and I don't listen much to modern rock any more, but what I require is a good vocalist, and something creative going on throughout. I saw one comment on an Arcade Fire video that said there wasn't much going on under the hood. That said it well, and frankly, their lead vocalist can't carry a tune.
Since you posted a couple of Muse links, I watched them and a bunch of others. "Time is Running Out" was just great! There was so much more going on there than with Arcade Fire, and Bellamy is a much better vocalist.
What can you say? The man loves what he does. He and Keith must be pretty tough SOBs to have survived the awesome amount of drugs they consumed.
