"Free trade" is not the solution to our problems. "Free trade" is the problem...
(vanity)

Posted on 02/13/2011 4:06:39 PM PST by Cringing Negativism Network

It is time to face up to the elephant in the living room, which for some reason conservative Americans are desperately determined to ignore.

"Free trade" is destroying America.

A generation ago, America was the world's preeminent power. We led the world in manufacturing. Technology. Space. Innovation. In every way, America was the best.

In a single generation, we have squandered that heritage, and now are deeply in debt to a communist nation which just one generation ago - rode only bicycles.

WTF will it take, to wake Americans (particularly conservative Americans, who should know better) up to the very real danger of stripping America of everything which made her great?

“So why do you want to punish ME?”

Why do you want to take my job away? If you can’t compete in a free market perhaps you should find something else.

Fair criticism.

I am not taking the side of unions. I recognize unions may benefit from a pro-American trade policy.

While I leave that criticism of yours on the table between us, recognizing it is valid. I ask you to look at the current alternative. And think for a moment whether this observation is equally valid?

The Peoples Republic of China, is the largest, most powerful labor union in the history of Earth.

The 2 most deceptive words in the English language are “free trade”.

What mechanism do you suggest we use to restrict free trade?

Well, at least I got you to admit your ignorance about economics (and the underlying deception about having take economics courses in your trade school).

And a position based in ignorance is just that.

It is like saying “I know 1+1=3 so therefore...”

I am sure some may find your incredibly short-sighted and ignorant position amusing, but since we don’t have a common language to discuss it I will leave it at that.

I agree wage/bene levels are a big part of the problem. Minimum wage laws have added to this problem. Certainly there are wages/benes that are far out of proportion to their productivity. A garbage collector that earns $100,000 plus benes is one, but so is a banker who gets millions even though the bank loses billions.

But there are other potential inducements to attracting business & industry.

The USA is a fairly honest & stable place to do business. The lights stay on 24/7, usually. Water & waste disposal are reliable. Transportation & communication is unrivaled in the world.

No we can't compete with Asian nations making underwear & stuffed dolls. Who cares? But we COULD compete in hi-tech items, IF the gov’t would get the hell out of the way, stop subsidizing some businesses at the expense of others, & stop pretending they know what is best for American business.

“What mechanism do you suggest we use to restrict free trade?”

All companies who want to sell to the US have to comply with all the regulations that US companies have to.

The Peoples Republic of China, is the largest, most powerful labor union in the history of Earth.

I'm not sure what that means. China can't go on strike, right? They could raise their prices but then they would open themselves up to more competition.

It seems to me that America is sucking Chinese labor dry and getting full advantage of the Chinese people's sweat and labor at a low price. The lower the price we Americans pay for the goods we want, the higher our effective "take home" pay, and the higher OUR standard of living.

>>Why do you want to take my job away? If you can’t compete in a free market perhaps you should find something else.<<

That is very confusing. Do you mean someone wants to take your job away but you can’t compete in a free market?

Is there a verb or a noun or an adjective not where you meant it to be?

“The lower the price we Americans pay for the goods we want, the higher our effective “take home” pay, and the higher OUR standard of living. “

Tell that to all the unemployed.

BTW what has happened to our standard of living compared to that of the Chinese?

I’ll speak slower so you can understand.

My response had two sentences. The first one was asking why he wanted to take my job away.

The second pointed out that if he couldn’t compete in the free market he should find something else. We don’t have a free market right now.

Was that slow enough for you? Perhaps you only attended the first day of your econ class and missed the rest.

I invite you to quote which specific passages are ignorant. If you catch me in a statement of fact that is incorrect I will verbally prostrate myself before you.

If you find asking people to understand their subject matter to be offensive, then what possible medium of communication can we possible have?

“LOL—”Your farm tractors generate too much dust when they drive around.””

Exactly! Chinese furniture makers dump their chemicals behind the building. Those in North Carolina are forced to properly dispose of it at tremendous expense.

EPA, OSHA, Labor laws, vacation, healthcare and so on.

Shouldn't be a problem now that the Republicans control the House.

Still I don't understand why you chose to ignore the union labor rates the crush our exports, and instead focus on the minimum wage, which is applied to employees at Walmart, McDonalds, ...

Thank you for the clarification. My question stands: why do you want to punish me?
