What would two dozen servers from across the country tell you if they could get away with it? Well, for starters, when to go out, what not to order, what really happens behind the kitchens swinging doors, and what they think of you and your tips. Here, from a group that clears a median $8.01 an hour in wages and tips, a few revelations that arent on any menu.
What you should know on Valentine's Day 1. Make reservations early. Restaurants usually don't have an abundance of tables for two. We need to time to plan where to put everyone. You'll get a better table and we'll be prepared.
2. Don't propose. It's so cliché. But if you do, warn us first. We'll put you in the corner. Nothing's worse than a crying woman in the center of the restaurant. Trust me.
3. Since Valentine's Day is on a Monday this year, go out on Friday or Saturday. Most restaurants will also serve their special Valentine's Day menu on those days. Or go out for brunch! Then you can sleep the rest of the day.

LOLOLOL! Your kids are great!
In a “weird, weirder, weirdest” sort of way. I shudder to think what a 10th might be like.
Probably as wonderful as all of the others. :)
even delivering pizza in high school, my kid would clear @ $125/night, and his territory included a state college campus (not notoriously big tippers).
Last two years of undergrad I waited tables and bartended at a famous but now bankrupt chain restaurant.
I didn’t eat at a chain restaurant when I was paying the check for almost 5 years after that.
NEVER ask for lemon wedges!! EVER!!
Probably not, but I craved a beer. When I ordered a small, with no food, they knew something was up. It was a microbrewery with outstanding food.
Also, I knew money was coming in. If I wasn’t sure of that, I would have been eating at home, with a menu of rice and coffee.
True in most of the world, actually.
I did a couple years in restaurants, and the church groups were always chintzy. Big groups where half the people got water or ice tea and everyone left little or nothing for tips.
Middle aged women are also very cheap on tips. I would be called racist to mention who the worst customers of all were.
All the same, even 20 years ago in the midwest, a server who only earned $8 and hour was a lousy server. Where I worked, $12-15 was probably average and the really good ones got upwards of $20/hr. Of course the most the IRS every knew about was probably $8/hr.
I have done that, and I have had it done to me. I knew it was coming when it was done to me. Sometimes sh*t happens.
Daughter: “Mommy what does semen taste like and how do you know??”
and don’t forget how many restaurants have illegal aliens prep your meals, not wearing rubber gloves and dropping food! and yes, some restaurants do drop expensive steaks and put it on the plate.(like that 10 second rule they have with fast food joints)
Dare I ask why??
Story you may like: Years ago, dinner for 12, celebrating a college graduation. Nice restaurant, lousy service. $700 + tab. My father-in-law, was the host, left three 20's as the tip. As we walked out, he was in front of me and I was bringing up the rear.
Waiter approaches him, the bill folder was open, three 20's on display. Waiter says: "Sir, I think you may have made a mistake."
Without missing a beat, F-I-L, says: "You're right son, thank you very much." As he says this he picks up one of the 20's! I bet that waiter never pulled that one again.
I agree

Good one!
Excellent! Imagine the nerve. How sad it is that some people wander through life without a clue. Ironically, they’re usually the most boisterous in their opinions.
