Sea Shepherd Interrupts Illegal Whale Slaughter (WHALE WARS)
Sea Shepherd ^ | 2/9/11 | Sea Shepherd

Posted on 02/09/2011 11:51:05 AM PST by Dengar01

The Sea Shepherd scout vessel Gojira found the illegal Japanese whaling ship Sea Shepherd calls the Cetacean Death Star at 2115 NZST on February 9th. The Nisshin Maru was caught in the process of unlawfully flensing a whale on their aft deck at the position of 74 degrees 16 minutes south and 149 degrees 2 minutes west.

The Gojira immediately gave chase as the Nisshin Maru attempted to escape by entering a field of ice. The Gojira attempted to block the huge factory ship to buy time for the Bob Barker to arrive from some 28 miles away. Captain Locky MacLean engaged the Nisshin Maru in a skirmish, and notified the Japanese whalers that they were not to continue their illegal whaling.

The Nisshin Maru seemed to be engaged in flensing operations at the time it was discovered. Work lights illuminated the deck as water was being flushed over the sides and brown-red stains were visible along the aft deck of the vessel around the scuppers/ drain holes, while black smoke bellowed from the factory smoke stack.

Photo: Gary StokesThe Gojira was stopped in an area of growlers and floe ice as the Nisshin Maru proceeded to bear down on her. Despite several VHF calls to alter course, the Nisshin Maru closed in on the Gojira. When the Nisshin Maru was 40 meters away, Captain MacLean fired a flare to signal the Nisshin Maru to alter course. The Japanese factory ship altered course to starboard, as the Gojira slid 20 meters down her port side.

At 0220 on February 10th, the Nisshin Maru and one of the harpoon boats entered thick pack ice after several hours of zigzagging through loose floe ice. The Gojira kept up skirting the ice edge, meeting the Nisshin Maru on the far side of each floe using her speed advantage.

The Nisshin Maru proceeded to the south towards an area of pack ice. It appeared as if the Gojira was about to lose the factory ship in the thick ice when the Bob Barker arrived just in time to take over the pursuit.

At 0400 hours, the Bob Barker placed itself immediately aft to the stern slipway of the Nisshin Maru to block any further attempts to offload dead whales. The Bob Barker is now easily pursuing the Nisshin Maru through thick pack ice with the Gojira continuing to skirt around the ice looking for harpoon vessels.

The Sea Shepherd ship Steve Irwin departed from Wellington, New Zealand at 1800 hours on February 9th and is expected to meet up with the Sea Shepherd fleet and the Japanese whaling fleet in about five days.

The Bob Barker needs to hold position on the stern of the Nisshin Maru until the Steve Irwin can assist it. By blocking the stern slipway, the factory ship is unable to load dead whales from the harpoon vessels, allowing Sea Shepherd to effectively shut down their illegal whaling operations.

Here is actually the point that I attempted to explain to one of my students:

Japanese whaling (and yes, dolphin slaughter): 2000 years old
Animal rights activism: 50 years old

If liberals are so multicultural, why are they not respecting foreign culture?

I’ve eaten whale and dolphin and they both are delicious.

The hunt isn’t illegal. At most it’s in violation of a convention that’s not even a treaty. The Sea Shepherd clowns are pirates and should be treated as such.

No sympathy for those who kill whales.

But even less for those who practice piracy on the high seas.

Canadians slaughter baby seals. I think their quota for that year was 100,000 males. Unfortunately, they also slaughter female baby seals and toss them in the ocean. A gaffing hook was used to hook them through their body and they were flipped over, still alive. If they were a male, their penis was cut off and then they were thrown into the water. If they were a female, they were thrown into the water where they also drowned. Canadian seal hunters sold the seal penises to the Chinese where they were dried, powdered and used for erectile dysfunction. I was there to help document the slaughter. It was a good cause.

They’ve got nothing to document because it isn’t illegal. At most they’re in violation of the accords of a voluntary international organization which isn’t backed up by any treaty. The hippies like to call it illegal but they’re lying... ok they’re probably not smart enough to know the truth so they’re just sadly mistaken.

“Sea Shepherd is doing a good thing. Hope they ram those bastards.”

Arguably, if you think Sea Shepherd is doing a good thing, you sustained long term brain damage from the fall you described while you were aboard the Sea Shepherd.

Why would you want Sea Shepherd to ram the whaler?

That will result in loss of the SeaShepherd, and the probable drowning of your old buddies aboard the Sea Shepherd.

Just sayin’.

I would be very concerned about the amount of mercury you are consuming when eating whale and dolphin meat.

It has been documented that some Japanese are eating dolphin meat and have no idea that they are. Call it a "bait and switch" pardon the pun. But anyways the amount of mercury present in the meat is insanely high.

I personally don't eat fish in general because of the filthy condition of the waters in Asia. They dump all their toxic crap in the water or there are fish farms where they pack as many fish in tanks and then load it up with antibiotics while the fish swim in their feces.

I don't want to sound like a hippie but I prefer eating "All Natural" food. My dad produces all natural dog food and really benefited when the Chinese made dog food poisoned many pets because there are literally NO standards in Asia. And the same goes for the veggies from Mexico where the workers crap and piss in the fields.

I actually have been healthier since eating all natural food than when I was eating whatever.

So in short the pattern of the other seasons continues. While Admiral Coco Puffs in back in port every few days loading up on Ding Dongs and Thunderbird Wine the poor granola crew (fruits, nuts, flakes) on the Bob Barker have to do the actual chase, find and engage. Mouth Breather and the rest of the crew of the Pixie Dust (Steve Irwin) will show up later so they can get some camera time.

Got it.

Yep, pretty much sums it up and they keep complaining about the ice and how the Japanese are using it to their advantage.... DUH??? They are in Antarctic waters WTF do they expect 70 degrees and sunny?

So it is going to be Season 3 with more ice.

I worked on Sea Shepherd III back in March 1998.

I always respect those who "walk the walk", even when they are misguided and dead wrong. But that doesn't mean they should get away with anything.

Ramming those bastards amounts to piracy on the high seas, and if captured the SS people should dance at the end of a rope.

If you want to stop whaling, go about it legally through the (spit) U.N., not by illegal assaults.

A good seal skin pelt was going for about $90 Canadian when you were there. No way are they cutting the penises off and then throwing almost a $100 bill away to drown, you are full of shit.

I hope everyone on the Sea Shepherd is captured and hung from the nearest yardarm. I’d pay good money to see that.

I wish the Japanese would sink these hippies and machine-gun the survivors in the water.

A little three inch naval gun with HE rounds would take care of them quite nicely, at a standoff distance of four or five miles. No need to m-g the ones in the water; hypothermia will finish them off.

Cowgirl,
Whaling is a subject of intense debate, even here amongst the raw meat eating conservatives. I give you credit for going and doing something you believe in. Many people never leave their porch. I have the feeling you and I have vastly different opinions of Paul Watson and the SSCS. Someone last season put it very well but I can’t find the quote. If they stopped all whaling, they’d move on to dolphins full time. Then tuna. Then crabs. Then something else. It’s not about saving endangered species. Every time one of these environmental groups get asked how many whales do there have to be before they aren’t endangered they won’t answer. It’s about control. We can make you stop doing things that offend us.

I think commercial whaling will end soon but not because of Paul Watson, though I am sure he will take all credit. There just isn’t a market for the product. The whaling fleet lives on Japanese government subsidies since they can’t sell enough to cover their costs. The free market and budget tightening will make the choice.

Welcome to Free Republic. I hope you learn a lot here. I still do.

Why are libs so in love with whales? Yes, why are you Libs so in love with whales? They are being harvested and consumed by people. They are also being counted and managed like we do Beef cattle, pigs and chickens.

I guess it is a matter of how many there are. Minke are not endangered but are pretty close.

A place in my town (suburban Chicago) was busted for selling endangered meat (tiger, lion, elephant, ect...)

Why am I against whaling? Because I think it should have ended in the 1800s when the whale population was almost completely eliminated.

Why am I against the slaughter of thousands of dolphins with HIGH levels of mercury in Taji, Japan? Because it is the most disgusting thing I have seen in my entire life and also dolphins are smarter than democrats. Besides humans, dolphins are considered the next smartest creature on Earth and I don't like seeing them slaughtered in the most gruesome ways imaginable.

As most know Chicago is famous for its old Stockyards. Well there are still slaughter houses in Chicago and they slit the throats of the animals which is a quick death. Harpooning a whale can take anywhere from 30 minutes to 2 hours for the animal to die. Spearing dolphins same thing. Just wait to let the animal choke on its own blood.

A lot of people don't realize how brutal the Japanese were in World War II, this was only 60 years ago folks. They bayoneted children. Look at what they did to our troops during the Bataan death march they would bayonet random soldiers for fun. Do you really think a countries mentality can change completely within 60 years?

Watch World War II in HD or The War by Ken Burns and you'll get a good idea of what the Japanese did to Americans during World War II especially our civilians in the Philippines.

Call me racist, but I believe that SOME Japanese have not let go of their violent past and instead of bayoneting infants they are spearing dolphins instead. All in the name of "tradition".
