Hercules, a five year old boxer, saved his family from a roof collapse in their Long Island home after severe snow cause the roof to come crashing down. In the wake of severe snow storms that have struck the New York area, authorities are now urging property owners to clear the snow off their roofs to prevent possible harm and injury.
The event began Saturday night when the normally quiet Hercules began to bark as the Hatzis family slept reports Newsday. His barks alerted the family to ominous cracking sounds from their garage, prompting the family to rescue their car moments before the snow covered roof collapse.
No one was hurt in the event, but the experience was scary for ten-year-old Nick. "I thought it was an earthquake and the whole house was gonna fall down."
As New York prepares for another snow storm this week, the weight of the snow from previous snow storms presents possible danger for New York residents who have not clear the snow off their rooftops.
Meanwhile, Hercules is being hailed as a hero. "Oh my God!" exclaims Nick. "We have the best dog."
Doubtless my kittehs would've done the same.
assuming they didn't cause the collapse in the first place.
None....
Getting on a roof to shovel it off isn't that big of a deal.
And so what if you fall? What do you think you're going to be landing in if you have enough snow to need to shovel off your roof in the first place?
Far fewer people than would get hurt if their snow covered roof collapsed on them and their families.
Climb out the bathroom or bedroom window with a shovel and shovel it off.
Just sayin'.....
And obviously, you don't live in an area that needs roof clearing. You comments are ridiculous.
I will say that there are some roofs that are impossible to clear. My barn was one. In that case prayer might be the answer.
You have to keep up with it.
But for most houses, it’s not an issue doing so.
Your landlord’s barn is a different issue. Flat roofs are in more danger of collapsing, but are also easier and safer to clear.
Insulation goes a long way to preventing ice build up thus allowing for easier shoveling.
NEWFANE, Vt. (AP) - A Vermont man buried up to his neck in snow that fell off his roof has been saved by a trooper who spotted his head and gloved hand.
Police say 52-year-old Jean Butler of Newfane was raking snow off his house Friday when the snow toppled from the roof, trapping him for about two hours.
That barn had no insulation. Farmers don’t insulate their barns around here. And the angle of that roof combined with 2 ice storms was a disaster waiting to happen.
Speaking of shooting fish in a barrel.
I said SHOVELING OFF the roof, not RAKING it off.
Sheesh, get some reading comprehension lessons.
I don’t know of any farmer who insulates his barn.
The animals just grow thicker coats.
Much as I hate the wind in snow storms, it does have the advantage of tending to blow the roofs fairly clean.
My dog rescued my family when an apartment flood from the eighth floor made it down to my apartment on the third floor causing my ceiling to begin to collapse. She woke us at 4am by barking and running to the empty room where the ceiling was falling.
She was a rescued pitbull who died at age sixteen.
That’s not a flat roof. It’s known as a mansard roof. It has 2 different angles.
Yup. But it was the ice that done it in. The poor thing. Now we have high winds coming and they didn't get the front pushed down Saturday. We'll see which way it falls. ;-)

For another species, I remember reading that a Black Dutch rabbit woke
up his owners in the early morning hours before they realized the house
was starting to burn.
My brother had a Black Dutch. A very intersting creature in that it
was very affectionate and ate pizza. Including the pepperoni!
Well over 100 roofs?
Has gov whatshisname declared the state a disaster area?
My husband was saved when he was just a toddler by a Boxer. He got out of the house and was heading towards the road. The Boxer stood in front of him and if my husband moved left, the Boxer moved left. Finally, the dog used his head and sort of pushed him back till my MIL came out of the house. The Boxer got a cookie and a loving pat on the head and my FIL installed some sort of latch on the doors. They truly are beautiful dogs.
