NFL's 'most storied franchises' to clash as history's Goliaths
PITTSBURGH TRIBUNE-REVIEW ^ | Sunday, February 6, 2011 | Bob Cohn

Mark Murphy is an educated man and a former hard-hitting NFL safety. Both conditions help the Green Bay Packers' president understand why Super Bowl XLV is unique. "To me it's the two most storied franchises in the league," he said of the Packers and Steelers, who meet today at Cowboys Stadium in Arlington, Texas. "You look at the team with the most championships versus the team with the most Super Bowl championships. It's really something." The names ring out. Art Rooney and Curly Lambeau. Terry Bradshaw and Bart Starr. Joe Greene and Ray Nitschke. Chuck Noll and Vince Lombardi. And on and on.

I haven’t watched a super bowl in many years.

I did watch the first one (on tv) and remember the whipping Green Bay put on Kansas City.

One of the best parts involved a cornerback nicknamed “the hammer”. The week before the game he was on numerous shows talking about how he was going to hit them with his “hammer blow” which was basically a forearm.

Not too far into the game, running back Donny Anderson ran into the hammer and knocked him cold.

Bart Starr was like a human robot, just perfection in running the offense and he called the plays on the field.

As one of the 117,000 shareholders of the Packers I am so looking forward to this match.

If given a choice of rooting for between Pigsburgh and Greengay I'll choose the Arlington Memorial hospital emergency room.

The dirty playing ‘Stealers’ will seek to injure GB’s excellent quarterback early in the game, perhaps even sacrificing one of their players to make the illegal ‘hit’. Watch for it. Pittsburgh is a dirty, anything goes team from a union background region. This Steelers team is not the same type of players as when Terry Bradshaw played there.

Best backfield ever. Together roughly ‘57-’66.....Bart Starr, Paul Hornung and Jimmy Taylor. Case closed as Archie Bunker would say.

I would hardly call two dozen millionaires that "perform" ten minutes per week "history's Goliaths."

The things that professional athletes do, no matter how amazing, shrink to insignificance in just a few years.

It's not about money, it's about pride and ownership. The only tangible benefit of owning the stock is that as a shareholder, you are entitled to attend shareholder meetings. But when you actually own a piece of the team it changes everything. They are not just the team you root for, they are YOUR TEAM.

An added benefit of the structure as a whole is that we have no bigwig owner, no Jerry Jones, or Dan Snyder. We have no discussions about the team moving.

Without the original stock offering the team wouldn't be in existance and Green Bay would effectively be Hammond, Indiana.

Oh for God's sake. The Steelers aren't any "dirtier" than any other team. And there are some conservatives in Pittsburgh who root for the Steelers. I count myself among them. Go Steelers!

How many NFL teams were there in the days before the true NFL came around and true champions were crowned?

Doesn’t matter. As long as there were only two, there was always a winner and loser. Nobody ever remembers who finshed in second place, except the loser.
